Why the carpet you buy is never the size of your floor
Carpet leaves the mill as a roll of one fixed width — 12 ft almost everywhere in North America, 15 ft for some broadloom lines, and 4 m (13 ft 1 in) on imported goods. You cannot buy half a roll width. Whatever length the retailer cuts off, you pay for the full width of it, so the unit you are really purchasing is linear feet of roll, priced as though it were square yards.
That single fact explains every surprise on a carpet quote. A 12 ft × 15 ft bedroom takes exactly one 15 ft drop off a 12 ft roll: 180 sq ft bought, 180 sq ft laid, nothing wasted. Push the room to 13 ft × 15 ft and a second strip becomes unavoidable, because 13 ÷ 12 rounds up to 2. Turn the layout so the strips run the 13 ft way and you buy two 13 ft drops, 312 sq ft: the floor grew by 8% and the order grew by 73%, and that is the better of the two layouts, not the worse one.
A take-off turns room dimensions into that purchased length, and everything downstream — seams, padding, tack strip, installed cost — follows from it. Get it wrong and you cannot quietly top up later, because dye lots do not repeat.
The formula: strips, drops and the ceiling function
Start with the number of strips. Lay the roll so it runs the length of the room; the number of full-width strips you need is the room width divided by the roll width, rounded up:
strips = ⌈W_room ÷ W_roll⌉
The ceiling brackets are the whole calculation in miniature. 11.5 ft of room across a 12 ft roll is one strip. 12.1 ft is two. There is no partial strip and no credit for the leftover.
Next, the drop length. A drop is the cut length of one strip. On plain carpet the drop equals the room length. On a patterned carpet, every drop has to start at the same point in the design or the pattern will not line up across the seam, so each drop is rounded up to a whole number of repeats:

An 18 in repeat on a 13 ft room gives ⌈13 ÷ 1.5⌉ = 9 repeats = 13.5 ft per drop. Six inches per strip sounds trivial until you have eight strips.
Multiply the strips by the drop length to get the run of roll you buy, then multiply by the roll width for area, then divide by 9 for square yards. The calculator does this twice — once with strips running along the length, once running along the width — and keeps the cheaper answer, because turning the layout 90° is free and often saves an entire strip. That is exactly what a good estimator does on paper.
Stairs come off the same roll but across it. You cut a piece the width of the stair, long enough to cover one riser, one tread and the wrap over the nosing. With a 36 in stair and a 12 ft roll you get four pieces out of every cut, so 13 treads need ⌈13 ÷ 4⌉ = 4 cuts, not 13. If your stair is wider than the roll, no piece can be cut in one span and the calculator flags it.
Padding and labour are consumed on the finished area instead: padding is trimmed to the room and the offcut is scrap. So the cost line applies carpet price to what you buy, but pad and labour to what you cover.
Worked example: a 14 × 20 ft family room and a 13-step staircase
You are carpeting a 14 ft × 20 ft family room and the stairs down to it — 13 treads, 36 in wide, 7½ in risers on 10 in treads. The carpet is a plain 12 ft broadloom at $28/sq yd, rebond padding at $6/sq yd, fitting at $8/sq yd. There are two 3 ft doorways.
- Finished floor area. 14 × 20 = 280 sq ft.
- Try the roll running the 20 ft way. Strips = ⌈14 ÷ 12⌉ = 2. Each drop is 20 ft, so the run is 2 × 20 = 40 ft and you buy 12 × 40 = 480 sq ft.
- Try the roll running the 14 ft way. Strips = ⌈20 ÷ 12⌉ = 2. Each drop is 14 ft, so the run is 2 × 14 = 28 ft and you buy 12 × 28 = 336 sq ft. This is the cheaper layout, so it wins. Either way there is one seam.
- Stair piece length. (7.5 + 10 + 1.5 in of nosing wrap) ÷ 12 = 1.5833 ft per tread.
- Stair cuts. A 12 ft roll is 144 in wide, so ⌊144 ÷ 36⌋ = 4 treads come out of every cut. 13 treads need ⌈13 ÷ 4⌉ = 4 cuts, each 1.5833 ft long: 4 × 1.5833 × 12 = 76 sq ft bought, against 13 × 1.5833 × 3 = 61.75 sq ft actually on the stairs.
- Total to order. 336 + 76 = 412 sq ft ÷ 9 = 45.78 sq yd.
- Waste. Finished area is 280 + 61.75 = 341.75 sq ft, so waste is (412 − 341.75) ÷ 341.75 = 20.6%.
- Padding. 341.75 sq ft = 37.97 sq yd, cut to fit.
- Tack strip. Perimeter 2 × (14 + 20) = 68 ft, less 6 ft of doorways = 62 linear ft.
- Cost. Carpet 45.78 × $28 = $1,281.78. Padding 37.97 × $6 = $227.83. Labour 37.97 × $8 = $303.78. Total $1,813.39.
Notice that the $1,281.78 of carpet buys 45.78 sq yd but only 37.97 sq yd ends up on the floor. That gap — about $220 of material — is the real cost of the roll width, and it is invisible if you price the job from floor area alone.
How to read the waste percentage
Waste is the honest measure of how well your rooms suit the roll. Under about 10% means your room width sits just under a whole number of strips and almost nothing is thrown away. Between 10% and 25% is ordinary for a rectangular room that does not divide neatly. Above 30% you should stop and re-plan, because you are buying a third more carpet than you will ever walk on.
Change the run direction. Free, and often decisive — in the worked example above it saved 144 sq ft. The calculator already applies it; if you are estimating by hand, always compute both ways.
Change the roll width. A wider roll is not automatically better, which is the most common misconception in carpet buying. A 15 ft roll wastes 25% on a 12 × 12 room that a 12 ft roll fits perfectly, and 50% on a 10 × 10. It only wins when your room width falls between the two widths — 13, 14 or 15 ft — where the 12 ft roll is forced into a second strip and the 15 ft roll is not. Use the offcut. A full-width piece left over from a long drop will carpet a closet or the stair treads. This calculator counts each area separately and never nests offcuts, so its figure is a safe ceiling — ask your fitter whether the real order can come down.
One seam in a bedroom is unremarkable; three in a small room means the layout is fighting the roll. On patterned carpet a seam is also a matching problem, which is why the drop rounding matters.

The 15 ft roll wins on exactly three of these ten rooms — the ones between 13 and 15 ft across. Everywhere else the narrower roll buys less carpet, so never assume the wide roll is the economical choice.
The installation standard behind the tack strip and seam rules
Residential stretch-in carpet installation in the United States is governed by CRI 105, the Carpet and Rug Institute's Standard for Installation of Residential Carpet (CRI 104 covers commercial work). It covers subfloor preparation, tackless strip placement, power stretching and seam construction, and manufacturers reference it when they define what voids a warranty. It does not set an order quantity: the take-off arithmetic here is estimating practice, not a code requirement. What it does justify is treating tack strip as a continuous perimeter item broken only at openings, and sizing padding to the floor rather than to the roll.
Stair geometry comes from the building code instead. The International Residential Code, Section R311.7.5, caps residential risers at 7¾ in and sets a 10 in minimum tread depth, which is why the defaults here are 7½ in and 10 in. Measure your own stair anyway: older houses routinely predate the code, and an 8½ in riser adds an inch of carpet to every tread.
Mistakes that make a carpet order wrong
- Ordering to floor area. Length × width ÷ 9 gives the area you will walk on, not the area you will be invoiced for. On the worked example that method under-orders by 8 square yards.
- Assuming a wider roll is cheaper. It is cheaper only when your room falls between the two widths. Check the comparison chart before you let a salesperson upsell you to 15 ft goods.
- Letting adjoining areas run in different directions. Cut pile shades differently depending on which way the tufts lean, so two pieces laid at 90° to each other read as two different colours under the same window. Every piece in one continuous space has to run the same way, which can override the cheaper direction this calculator picks room by room.
- Forgetting the pattern repeat. A 27 in repeat on a large room can add 10% to the order on its own, and it is not optional — without the rounding the seams will not match.
- Measuring at the baseboard instead of into the doorways. Carpet runs under the door and stops at the centre of the door stop. Add 3 to 4 in at every opening or you will be seaming a strip in later.
- Buying padding to the purchased area. Padding comes in 6 ft rolls, gets trimmed to the room, and the offcut is scrap. Buy it to floor area, and remember tack strip does not run across doorways — a transition strip does.
- Ignoring dye lot. Under-order and you cannot simply buy more: different dye lots of the same style are visibly different in daylight. Order the whole job at once, from one roll where possible.
- Skipping the stair nosing wrap. Rise plus tread alone is short by an inch or two per step; this calculator applies the common rule of thumb of 1½ in of extra wrap per tread.

- Two ways of finishing a stair. Waterfall runs the carpet straight over the nosing; cap-and-band wraps and tucks each tread separately, using slightly more carpet and considerably more labour.
When to measure a different way, and what this calculator leaves out
This is a rectangular take-off. It assumes each room is a clean rectangle, that strips run parallel, and that offcuts are not nested between areas. Three situations break those assumptions.
L-shaped and irregular rooms. Split the space into rectangles at the inside corner and enter them as two rooms, then ask the retailer for a seaming diagram. A bay window, a hearth or a stairwell opening changes which strip lands where, and no formula sees that.
Carpet tiles. Tiles have no roll width and no drop, so the calculation collapses to area ÷ tile area, rounded up. Waste runs well below broadloom because an offcut from one edge fits the opposite edge, so compare the two options on delivered quantity rather than on price per square foot.
Commercial glue-down. Direct-glue work follows CRI 104 rather than CRI 105, uses no padding and no tack strip, and is normally quoted per square foot. Set the padding price to zero and ignore the trim line.
Two limits are worth stating plainly.
