What gauge is and why every pattern starts with it
Gauge is the density of your knitted fabric: how many stitches fit in a given width and how many rows fit in a given height. The Craft Yarn Council convention, which almost every English-language pattern follows, states gauge over 4 inches or 10 centimetres — for example 20 stitches and 28 rows to 4 in in stocking stitch. Divide by four and you have stitches per inch, which is the conversion factor between the flat measurements on a schematic and the stitch counts you actually work.
Gauge is a property of the combination of yarn, needle, stitch pattern and knitter, not of the yarn alone. Two people knitting the same yarn on the same needles routinely differ by a stitch per inch, which is why the ball band's suggested gauge is a starting point for needle choice and nothing more. Your hands, your tension, your stitch pattern and your blocking method set the real number.
The consequence is arithmetic, not opinion. Suppose a pattern is written at 5 stitches per inch and you knit 5.5. Cast on the pattern's 110 stitches and you get 110 ÷ 5.5 = 20 inches instead of 22 — a garment two inches narrower across the front, four inches narrower around the body. Nothing about the knitting was wrong; the conversion factor was. This calculator makes that conversion explicit so the error never reaches your needles.
The formula, and why it is a ratio rather than a table
Every gauge calculation is one of two forms. The first converts a measurement into stitches: divide your 4-inch gauge by four to get stitches per inch, then multiply by the width you want. The second converts a stitch count written for someone else's gauge into a stitch count for yours: multiply the pattern's number by the ratio of the two gauges.
That ratio form matters because it preserves the designer's shaping. If you scale the cast-on by your gauge ratio, you scale every other stitch count in the pattern by the same factor — the underarm bind-off, the neckline, the number of stitches between decreases. A gauge that is 10% tighter than the pattern's needs 10% more stitches everywhere, not just at the hem.
Row gauge follows the identical relation with rows per inch and finished length, but it behaves differently in practice. Stitch gauge governs width, which is fixed by the cast-on and cannot be adjusted later. Row gauge governs length, which you can usually correct by simply working until the piece measures what you want. That is why patterns almost always give shaping in inches for length and in stitch counts for width, and why a stitch-gauge miss is far more expensive than a row-gauge miss.
The one place row gauge is unforgiving is shaping worked over a fixed number of rows: a sleeve increase every 6th row, a raglan decrease every other row, a set-in armhole. There the row count is doing structural work, and you should rescale it with the row-gauge ratio exactly as you rescale stitches. Worked example: a 20-inch wide, 24-inch long back panel
You have knitted, washed and blocked a swatch in stocking stitch. Across 4 inches you count 20 stitches; up 4 inches you count 28 rows. You want a sweater back that measures 20 inches wide and 24 inches long, and you are following a pattern written at 22 stitches to 4 inches which tells you to cast on 110.
- Stitches per inch. 20 ÷ 4 = 5.00 st/in.
- Rows per inch. 28 ÷ 4 = 7.00 rows/in.
- Cast-on. 5.00 × 20 in = 100 stitches.
- Rows to work. 7.00 × 24 in = 168 rows.
- Gauge deviation. The pattern is 22 ÷ 4 = 5.50 st/in. (5.00 − 5.50) ÷ 5.50 × 100 = −9.09%. Your stitches are wider than the designer's.
- Rescale the pattern. 110 × (5.00 ÷ 5.50) = 100 stitches. The pattern's 110 stitches at your gauge would measure 110 ÷ 5.00 = 22 inches, two inches wider than intended.
- Fit the repeat. If your stitch pattern is a 6-stitch repeat with 2 selvedge stitches, take (100 − 2) ÷ 6 = 16.33, round to 16 repeats, and cast on 16 × 6 + 2 = 98 stitches, which finishes at 98 ÷ 5.00 = 19.6 in.
The last step is the one knitters skip. A 100-stitch cast-on that cannot hold whole repeats forces you to fudge the pattern at one edge for the entire length of the piece. Losing 0.4 inches of width to keep the repeat honest is always the better trade.
How to read your gauge deviation
Treat the deviation figure as a decision, not a score. Under about 2% — roughly a tenth of a stitch per inch — you can knit the pattern as written; over a 40-inch garment that is under an inch of circumference, inside the tolerance of blocking. Between 2% and 5%, rescale the numbers rather than change needles, because the fabric you have swatched is presumably the fabric you like.
Above about 5%, change needles. A gauge that far off usually means the fabric itself is wrong for the yarn: too tight and the garment will be stiff and will not drape; too loose and it will grow, pill and lose its shape. As a working rule, one needle size shifts gauge by roughly half a stitch per inch in worsted-weight yarn, though the exact shift depends on the yarn. Re-swatch and re-measure rather than assuming.
Direction matters and is easy to get backwards. More stitches per inch means smaller stitches — a tighter gauge — so you need more of them to cross the same width, and you go up a needle size to loosen. Fewer stitches per inch means larger stitches, so you need fewer of them, and you go down a needle size to tighten. The warning this calculator prints states the direction explicitly for whichever way your swatch has landed.
One number deserves special suspicion: a swatch measured before blocking. Superwash wool, cotton and most plant fibres relax substantially in water, and a superwash yarn can gain 5–10% in width when washed. Measure the blocked swatch, treated exactly as you intend to treat the garment.

Stitches per inch is the 4-inch figure divided by four. Use the range to sanity-check your swatch: a worsted yarn measuring 26 stitches to 4 inches is being knitted far tighter than the yarn was designed for.
Mistakes that make a gauge number lie
- Swatching too small. A 4-inch swatch measured across its whole width includes the curl and the selvedge. Knit at least 6 inches square and measure the middle 4 inches.
- Measuring unblocked. Wash and dry the swatch the way you will wash the garment. Superwash wool and cotton change measurably; untreated wool changes less but still changes.
- Swatching flat for a piece knitted in the round. Most knitters purl at a different tension than they knit, so stocking stitch worked flat and worked in the round give different gauges in the same yarn. Swatch in the round for a garment knitted in the round.
- Swatching in stocking stitch for a cabled or textured piece. Cables pull in hard; lace opens out. Swatch in the stitch pattern the piece actually uses.
- Rounding the swatch count to a whole stitch. Half stitches matter. Counting 20 when the honest answer is 20.5 is a 2.5% error, which is an inch over a 40-inch body.
- Ignoring the stitch repeat. A cast-on that does not hold whole repeats forces a partial motif at one edge for the whole piece. Round to the repeat and accept the fractional width change.
- Assuming row gauge does not matter. It does not for plain length, which you knit to measurement. It absolutely does for shaping spread over a fixed number of rows, such as raglan decreases and sleeve increases.
Where gauge sits among your other project numbers
Gauge is the first calculation in a project, and everything downstream depends on it. Crochet works identically with one substitution: count stitches and rows over 4 inches of blocked fabric exactly as knitters do, and hook size replaces needle size. Because a single crochet stitch is much taller relative to its width than a knit stitch, crochet row gauge is typically far lower than its stitch gauge, and the row warning in this calculator is tuned for knitting rather than crochet.
Machine knitters and weavers use the same ratio under different names — stitches per inch becomes needle spacing or ends per inch — and the same failure mode applies: a sett or a tension dial that differs from the draft rescales the entire piece. Finally, resist the temptation to adjust gauge by changing yarn rather than needles. A yarn substitution changes the fabric's weight, drape and yardage per gram at the same time as its gauge, so the swatch you knit to fix a gauge problem must be knitted in the yarn you will actually use for the garment.
