The ceiling is the whole point of the calculation: yarn is sold in whole balls, and being one ball short at the second sleeve is the failure this arithmetic exists to prevent.

Why you substitute yardage, never ball count

A ball is a packaging decision. Two worsted yarns that knit to the same gauge can be wound at 191 yd and 328 yd per 100 g, and a pattern that says "8 balls" means nothing until you know which. Convert the requirement to yardage first — balls × yards per ball — and every yarn on the shelf becomes comparable.

That single conversion is what this calculator is built around. It multiplies out the pattern's total, applies a safety margin, divides by the substitute's yardage per ball, and rounds up, because you cannot buy 10.14 balls. It then does two comparisons that decide whether the substitution is sound at all: yards per gram, which measures how fine the yarn actually is, and stated gauge, which measures how the mill expects it to knit.

The two comparisons catch different mistakes. Yards per gram catches a yarn that is physically the wrong weight — 3.28 yd/g against 1.91 yd/g is not a near miss, it is a different yarn. Gauge catches a yarn of the right thickness spun or plied in a way that knits up differently, which happens routinely between a smooth merino and a lofty single.

The arithmetic, and the assumption hiding inside it

The calculation itself is short. Total yardage is balls × yards per ball. Add the margin, divide by the substitute's yards per ball, take the ceiling. That is the ball count.

The assumption is the interesting part: matching yardage only reproduces the pattern's fabric if the substitute knits at roughly the pattern's gauge. Yarn consumption is a property of the fabric, not of the pattern. Knit the same sweater at a looser gauge and you use fewer stitches to cover the same area, but each stitch is longer, and the two effects do not cancel neatly. The pattern's yardage figure was measured on a specific fabric, so it transfers cleanly only when the fabric is close to the same.

That is why the gauge outputs are here rather than as an afterthought. The gauge difference compares the substitute's stitches per 4 in with the original's. The width change answers a different question — if you knit the pattern's stitch counts unchanged, how much wider or narrower does the piece come out? That factor is gauge_old ÷ gauge_new: 20 sts per 4 in against 18 gives 20 ÷ 18 = 1.111, so every piece is 11.1% wider. A 40 in sweater becomes 44.4 in. The sign flips when the substitute is finer: 22 against 24 gives 22 ÷ 24 = 0.917, or 8.3% narrower.

Note that the two percentages are not each other's negatives, and they should not be. Going from 20 to 18 stitches is a −10% change in gauge but a +11.1% change in width, because one is a change in a rate and the other is a change in its reciprocal. Quoting the gauge difference as the width change is a common and expensive error on a garment.

Worked example: swapping a 220 yd worsted for a 191 yd worsted

Your pattern calls for 8 balls of a worsted at 220 yd per 100 g, gauge 20 sts to 4 in. The shop has a 191 yd per 100 g worsted stated at 18 sts to 4 in. You want a 10% margin because you always knit the body longer.

  1. Pattern yardage. 8 × 220 = 1,760 yd.
  2. Add the margin. 1,760 × 1.10 = 1,936 yd to match.
  3. Balls before rounding. 1,936 ÷ 191 = 10.14.
  4. Balls to buy. ceil(10.14) = 11 balls, which is 11 × 100 = 1,100 g.
  5. Left over. 11 × 191 = 2,101 yd, so 2,101 − 1,936 = 165 yd spare — most of a ball.
  6. Yards per gram. Original 220 ÷ 100 = 2.20 yd/g; substitute 191 ÷ 100 = 1.91 yd/g. The substitute is 13% denser per gram, so it is a genuinely heavier yarn.
  7. Gauge difference. (18 − 20) ÷ 20 = −10%.
  8. Width change. 20 ÷ 18 = 1.1111, so pieces knit at the pattern's stitch counts finish 11.1% wider.

Eleven balls is the right purchase, but the gauge line is the one that decides the project. Knit at the substitute's 18 sts to 4 in with no other change and a 40 in sweater becomes 44.4 in. Either go down a needle size until you hit 20 sts to 4 in, or knit the size whose finished measurement is 40 in when worked at 18 sts to 4 in — which usually means following the numbers for a size or two smaller. Reading the two comparisons

Treat the gauge difference as the go/no-go and the yards per gram as the explanation.

Within about 5% the yarns are interchangeable on the numbers. That much spread appears between two knitters using the same ball, so the pattern's yardage transfers and the finished measurements will be close.

Between 5% and about 12% the substitution works but the sizing does not come free. Match gauge by changing needle size, or accept the size shift and pick the pattern size that lands on your target measurement.

Beyond about 12% you have crossed a category boundary in the Craft Yarn Council's weight system, whose medium category spans 16–20 stitches to 4 in. At that point the pattern's yardage figure describes a fabric you are not going to make, and the ball count becomes a floor rather than an estimate. Swatch, measure the yarn a swatch of known area consumes, and scale to the garment's area instead.

Yards per gram is the honest check on all of this, because it is a measurement rather than a recommendation. A ball band's gauge is the mill's opinion; yards per gram is arithmetic. When the two disagree — same stated gauge, very different yards per gram — believe the yards per gram, and expect the lower-yardage yarn to make the denser, heavier fabric.

Every row is 1,936 ÷ yards per ball, rounded up. Note how badly the ball count tracks the total weight: 18 balls of 109 yd is 900 g, and so is 9 balls of 220 yd.

Buy the whole quantity in one dye lot

Hand-dyed and mill-dyed yarns both vary between lots, and the difference that is invisible in the shop is obvious across a sweater back. Buy every ball the calculator says in a single lot, including the margin. If you cannot, alternate two balls every other row through the section where the lots meet so the transition is gradual rather than a line. This is also why the calculator's leftover figure is worth a second look: dropping one ball to save money removes the buffer that lets you finish without a second lot.

Substitution mistakes that cost a project

  • Buying ball for ball. Eight balls of a 328 yd yarn is 2,624 yd; eight balls of a 109 yd yarn is 872 yd. The word "ball" carries no information.
  • Trusting the ball band's gauge instead of your own swatch. The band states what the mill got on their needles. Swatch in the stitch pattern you will actually use, wash it, and measure it dry.
  • Quoting the gauge difference as the size difference. A −10% gauge change is a +11.1% width change. Use the ratio gauge_old ÷ gauge_new, not the percentage difference.
  • Ignoring fibre when the numbers match. Cotton and superwash wool at identical gauge behave differently after washing: one grows, one drapes, one holds a rib. Yardage arithmetic cannot see this.
  • Substituting a plied yarn for a single, or vice versa. At equal yards per gram a lofty single knits looser and wears differently. Expect to change needle size even when both numbers agree.
  • Skipping the margin on a garment you will lengthen. Two extra inches of body on a sweater is a meaningful chunk of a ball, and it is the reason most knitters run short.

Where substitution sits in project planning

Substitution is the second calculation in a project, not the first. Gauge comes first: knit and block a swatch, measure it, and only then decide which yarn and which size. The weight categories referenced throughout come from the Craft Yarn Council's Standard Yarn Weight System, which assigns each category a knit gauge range over 4 in — 16 to 20 stitches for the medium category that covers most worsted yarns. It is a labelling convention rather than a technical standard, and mills apply it loosely, which is precisely why the yards-per-gram comparison is worth more than the symbol on the band.

How do I know how many balls of a substitute yarn to buy?

Multiply the pattern's ball count by its yards per ball to get total yardage, then divide by the substitute's yards per ball and round up. Eight balls of a 220 yd yarn is 1,760 yd; in a 191 yd yarn that is 1,760 ÷ 191 = 9.22, so ten balls without a margin and eleven with the 10% cushion most knitters want. Never compare ball counts directly.

What is yards per gram and why does it matter?

Yards per gram is the yarn's yardage divided by its weight, and it is the most direct measure of how fine a yarn is. A lace yarn might run 4 yd/g and a bulky 0.9 yd/g. Because it is arithmetic rather than a recommendation, it exposes a mislabelled yarn: two balls both marked worsted at 2.20 and 1.91 yd/g are 13% apart in linear density, and the heavier one will make the denser fabric.

Can I substitute a yarn with a different gauge?

Yes, but you must then choose between matching gauge and matching size. Change needle size until you hit the pattern's gauge and everything else in the pattern still applies. Or knit at the substitute's own gauge and pick the pattern size whose stitch count gives your target measurement — with 18 sts to 4 in instead of 20, every stitch count produces a piece 11.1% wider, so you generally follow a smaller size.

How much safety margin should I add?

Ten percent suits most garments. Push it to fifteen or twenty for a first attempt at an unfamiliar pattern, for a lengthened body or sleeves, for colourwork where you cannot easily rip back, and for any yarn you cannot restock in the same dye lot. Drop to zero only when you are matching a pattern you have knitted before in a yarn you can buy more of.

Does the calculator account for different stitch patterns?

No. It matches the pattern's stated yardage, which was measured on that pattern's own stitch pattern. Cables and heavy texture consume considerably more yarn per square inch than stocking stitch, and lace consumes less — but the pattern's figure already includes whatever it uses. The figure only stops being valid if you change the stitch pattern yourself, in which case swatch and measure the yarn a known area takes.

Why does the ball count go up when I buy a bigger ball?

It does not — it goes down, but the total weight can go up. Rounding always overshoots by up to one whole ball, and one whole ball of a 100 g put-up is twice the overshoot of a 50 g put-up. In the reference table, 18 balls of 109 yd and 9 balls of 220 yd both come to 900 g for the same 1,936 yd, because their per-ball overshoots happen to land in different places.

Is a substitution safe if the ball bands state the same gauge?

It is a good sign but not proof. Ball band gauge is the mill's recommendation on their needles in stocking stitch, and it varies with how firmly the sample was knitted. Check yards per gram as well: if two yarns claim identical gauge but differ by more than about 20% in yards per gram, one of the two bands is optimistic and your swatch will show which.

What if the pattern gives yardage instead of balls?

Enter 1 ball and put the whole yardage in the original yardage field. The multiplication then passes the figure through unchanged, the margin applies to it, and the division gives the substitute's ball count directly. Set the original grams per ball to the same yarn's real put-up if you want the yards-per-gram comparison to stay meaningful; otherwise ignore that output.
