Rates are stated per 1,000 square feet in turf work and per acre in agronomy. One acre is 43.56 thousand square feet, so multiplying a per-1,000 rate by 43.56 converts it to pounds per acre.

Why seeding rate is a species question, not a lawn question

A seeding rate is a target number of seeds on the ground, expressed in the units the industry buys seed in: pounds per 1,000 square feet for turf, pounds per acre for pasture and hay. The reason every species carries a different rate is seed size. Tall fescue runs about 227,000 seeds to the pound; Kentucky bluegrass runs about 2,200,000. Sow both at 7 pounds per 1,000 square feet and the fescue lands roughly 1,600 seeds on each square foot while the bluegrass lands over 15,000 — a stand so crowded that seedlings compete for water before they ever tiller.

Get the rate too low and the stand is thin, weeds colonise the gaps, and you spend the next two seasons fixing it with herbicide. Get it too high and you pay for seed you did not need, then watch a dense mat of seedlings run short of water and light and thin itself out anyway, often with a flush of damping-off in the middle. The rate is not a dial where more is safer in one direction.

Two other things change the number. A new seeding onto bare, prepared soil needs the full rate because nothing else is holding the ground. Overseeding into an existing lawn uses roughly half, because established plants already occupy much of the space and most of the water, and heavy overseeding just wastes seed that never reaches soil. And seed labels sell you a mix, not pure seed: what you actually plant is the pure live seed inside the bag, which is where the germination and purity percentages on the tag come in.

The arithmetic, in three lines

Everything here comes from one division and two conversions.

Pounds needed. Divide your area by 1,000 to get “thousands of square feet”, then multiply by the rate. A 5,000 square foot lawn is 5 thousands, so at 7 pounds per 1,000 you need 35 pounds. Nothing more complicated is happening.

Pounds per acre. An acre is 43,560 square feet, which is 43.56 thousands, so multiply any per-1,000 rate by 43.56. Seven pounds per 1,000 is 304.9 pounds per acre — which is why nobody seeds pasture at turf rates, and why a pasture mix at 0.55 pounds per 1,000 is the familiar 24 pounds per acre.

Seeds per square foot. Multiply the rate by the seeds per pound and divide by 1,000, because the rate is already per 1,000 square feet. Tall fescue at 7 pounds: 7 × 227,000 ÷ 1,000 = 1,589 seeds per square foot, or about 11 per square inch. This is the number that lets you compare species on equal terms, and the one that tells you instantly whether a bag rate you were given is sane.

Worked example: 5,000 ft² of tall fescue from bare soil

You have stripped and tilled a 5,000 square foot back lawn and are seeding turf-type tall fescue at the standard new-seeding rate of 7 pounds per 1,000 square feet. Seed costs $4.50 a pound in 50 pound bags.

  1. Thousands of square feet. 5,000 ÷ 1,000 = 5.0.
  2. Seed needed. 7 × 5.0 = 35 pounds.
  3. Bags. 35 ÷ 50 = 0.7, so you buy one 50 pound bag and keep the remainder for repairs.
  4. Rate per acre equivalent. 7 × 43.56 = 304.9 lb/acre.
  5. Seeds per square foot. 7 × 227,000 ÷ 1,000 = 1,589 seeds, which is 1,589 ÷ 144 = 11.0 seeds per square inch.
  6. Cost. 35 × $4.50 = $157.50.

Now suppose the same lawn is thin rather than bare and you are overseeding. The rate drops to 3.5 pounds per 1,000, so you need 17.5 pounds and spend $78.75 — but only if the seed reaches soil. Overseeding onto an unprepared surface, with no core aeration or verticutting and no thatch removal, puts most of that seed on top of the canopy where it dries out and never germinates. The pounds are the easy part.

Compare the same lawn in Kentucky bluegrass: 2.5 pounds per 1,000 is only 12.5 pounds of seed, but at 2,200,000 seeds per pound that is 5,500 seeds per square foot — three and a half times the seed count of the fescue lawn from 12.5 ÷ 35, just over a third of the weight.

Reading the result, and what to buy

Start with the seeds-per-square-foot figure, because it is the only output that is comparable across species. If your seed tag or your supplier gives you a rate that produces a wildly different seed count from the table below for the same species, one of the two numbers is wrong — usually the rate has been quoted per acre and read as per 1,000, a mistake that overshoots by a factor of 43.

Then buy on the bag count, not the exact pounds. Seed is sold in fixed bag sizes and there is no way to buy 35 pounds of a 50 pound bag, so the calculator rounds up. Keep the surplus dry and cool; most turf seed stays viable for two to three years in a sealed bag, and you will want it for repairs.

Check the tag before you accept the rate at face value. A seed tag reports purity and germination percentages, and the product of the two is pure live seed. A tag reading 95% pure and 85% germination delivers 0.95 × 0.85 = 0.81, so 81% of the bag weight is seed that can grow. Rates from extension guides are written for good-quality seed, so a lot that tests well below those percentages needs a proportional increase — divide your pounds by the pure live seed fraction. Cheap contractor mixes are cheap partly because they carry more inert matter and more weed seed.

Finally, treat the rate as a floor on preparation, not a substitute for it. Seed-to-soil contact, a firm seedbed, soil temperature in the right band for the species, and keeping the surface damp until emergence all matter more than a half-pound either side of the rate. The pasture row is the same arithmetic in agronomic clothing: 0.55 lb per 1,000 ft² is 24 lb per acre, the familiar drilled rate for a cool-season grass mix. Seeds per pound are species averages — a specific lot can differ, and the tag governs.

Seeding date beats seeding rate

For cool-season grasses — fescues, bluegrass, ryegrass — late summer to early autumn is the strongest seeding window in most of the United States: soil is warm, air is cooling, and annual weed pressure has passed. Spring seeding works but sets seedlings up to meet summer heat with a shallow root system. Warm-season grasses invert the rule; bermudagrass and zoysiagrass are seeded in late spring once soil temperature is reliably warm. A correctly-rated seeding at the wrong time of year will lose to a slightly under-rated seeding at the right one.

Mistakes that waste a bag of seed

  • Confusing pounds per acre with pounds per 1,000 ft². The factor between them is 43.56. Pasture rates are quoted per acre, turf rates per 1,000 square feet, and mixing the conventions is the single most expensive error on this page.
  • Seeding the whole property. Measure the grass, not the lot. Subtract the house footprint, driveway, patio and planting beds, or use a field area calculation for irregular shapes.
  • Ignoring pure live seed. Purity times germination is what actually grows. Divide the pounds by that fraction when the tag is well below typical quality.
  • Overseeding without opening the surface. Seed broadcast onto thatch or an intact canopy mostly never touches soil. Core aerate, verticut or slit-seed first.
  • Doubling the rate to get a thicker lawn. Density at maturity is set by tillering, water and nutrition, not by seed count. Excess seedlings simply compete and thin out.
  • Applying a pre-emergent herbicide near the seeding date. Most pre-emergents stop grass seed as effectively as crabgrass seed. Read the label interval before you sow, and again before the next application.
  • Sowing warm-season seed into cold soil. Bermudagrass and zoysiagrass need warm soil to germinate; sown early they sit and rot rather than waiting.

Seed, sod and pasture: choosing the method

Seeding is the cheapest way to establish grass per square foot and gives you the widest choice of cultivar, but it costs you a season of patience and a strict irrigation regime. Sod costs several times as much per square foot and gives you an instant, weed-free lawn that can be walked on within weeks — on a steep slope, along a street frontage, or where erosion starts the day you strip the old turf, that trade is usually worth making. Sprigging and plugging sit between the two for warm-season grasses that are rarely seeded.

On the agricultural side the same arithmetic runs at a different scale and with different vocabulary. Forage and cover-crop seedings are quoted in pounds per acre and often in pure live seed rather than bulk pounds, and drilled rates run below broadcast rates because the drill puts every seed at depth with good soil contact. What this calculator does not do is decide the species for you. That is a climate and use question: traffic tolerance, shade, irrigation availability, mowing height and your regional transition-zone position all bear on it, and the right answer in Raleigh is the wrong answer in Minneapolis. How much grass seed do I need per 1,000 square feet?

For a new seeding: about 7 pounds per 1,000 square feet for tall fescue or perennial ryegrass, 2.5 for Kentucky bluegrass, 4.5 for fine fescue and 1.5 for hulled bermudagrass. Halve those figures for overseeding into an existing stand. The differences come from seed size, not from how vigorous the grass is — small-seeded species need far fewer pounds to reach the same seed count on the ground.

How many pounds of grass seed per acre?

Multiply the per-1,000-square-foot rate by 43.56, because an acre is 43,560 square feet. Tall fescue at 7 pounds per 1,000 is 305 pounds per acre for a turf-density stand. Pasture and hay seedings are far lighter — a cool-season grass mix is commonly drilled at 20 to 25 pounds per acre, which is only about 0.5 pounds per 1,000 square feet, because forage stands are not asked to carry foot traffic.

Can I use more seed to get a thicker lawn?

No. A mature stand's density is set by tillering, nutrition, water and mowing height, not by how many seeds you sowed. Excess seedlings emerge, compete for the same water and light, and thin themselves out — often with a flush of damping-off disease in the crowded areas. You pay twice: once for the seed, once for the weak stand. Stay within the published range and spend the extra on seedbed preparation.

What is pure live seed and do I need to adjust for it?

Pure live seed is purity multiplied by germination, both printed on the seed tag. A tag showing 95% purity and 85% germination gives 81% pure live seed, so a 50 pound bag contains about 40.5 pounds of seed that can actually grow. Published rates assume good-quality seed, so when a lot tests well below typical values, divide your calculated pounds by the pure live seed fraction to keep the same seeds on the ground.

How many seeds per square inch should I aim for?

Use it as a comparison tool rather than a target. At the standard rates, tall fescue lands about 11 seeds per square inch, perennial ryegrass about 11, fine fescue about 17, bermudagrass about 19 and Kentucky bluegrass about 38 — all considered correct for their species. What the figure is good for is catching a rate that has been quoted in the wrong units, since an error of that kind shifts the seed count by a factor of tens.

Do I need more seed when overseeding a thin lawn than a bare one?

Less, not more. Overseeding rates are roughly half the new-seeding rate because the existing plants already occupy the ground and will out-compete anything you crowd in. The binding constraint on overseeding is not seed quantity but seed-to-soil contact: core aerate, verticut or use a slit seeder so the seed reaches soil rather than sitting on thatch, and keep the surface damp through germination.

How much does it cost to seed a lawn?

Multiply pounds by your seed price — the calculator does it for you once you enter the price per pound off your own bag. Seed is usually the smaller half of the bill: soil preparation, starter fertiliser, a soil test, topdressing and the water used through establishment often add up to more than the seed itself. Compare the total against a sod quote for the same area before deciding.

Does this work for pasture and hayfield seeding?

Yes. Choose the cool-season pasture or hay mix option, or enter your own rate as a custom value, and read the pounds-per-acre output rather than the per-1,000 figure. Two cautions: forage rates are usually quoted in pure live seed rather than bulk pounds, and drilled seedings use less seed than broadcast ones because placement is better. If you are broadcasting onto a rough seedbed, plan on the upper end of your state guide's range.
