Seeds, pounds and bags are three different units for the same order
Agronomists think in seeds per acre, drills are calibrated in pounds per acre, and invoices come in bags. Converting between the three is where seed orders go wrong, and the conversion factor — seeds per pound — varies more than most people expect. A pound of corn holds roughly 1,200 to 2,300 seeds depending on the seed size grade; a pound of alfalfa holds about 200,000; a pound of tall fescue about 227,000. Two lots of the same hybrid can differ by 30% in seeds per pound and therefore in the pounds you need to hit the same population.
The second correction is pure live seed, or PLS. A seed tag reports germination and purity separately: germination is the percentage of the pure seed that grows under laboratory conditions, purity is the percentage of the bag's weight that is the crop seed you bought rather than inert matter, other crop seed or weed seed. Multiply the two and you get the fraction of the bag weight that will actually produce a plant. Ninety per cent germination and 85% purity is 76.5% PLS — one pound in four buys nothing.
Divide your target by PLS and you get the bulk rate to put out. This is not the same as dividing by expected field emergence. PLS is a property of the seed lot, measured in a laboratory; field emergence is a property of the seedbed. Careful growers apply both — a PLS adjustment from the tag and a separate field-emergence allowance from experience — and the two multiply rather than add.
Working the formula in the order that keeps the units straight
Do it in four moves and the units cancel visibly at each stage.
One: convert the target to a drop rate. Divide the target stand by the PLS fraction. 34,000 target ÷ 0.90 = 37,778 seeds to drop. Notice the direction — the number always goes up, because you are compensating for seed that will not grow.
Two: convert seeds to weight. Divide by seeds per pound. 37,778 ÷ 1,700 = 22.22 lb per acre. This step is the one people skip when they assume last year's pounds per acre still applies to this year's lot.
Three: scale to the field. Multiply by planted acres. Use planted acres, not deeded acres — see the acreage calculation for the difference, which on a squared-off 40 with headlands is often close to 9%.
Four: convert to what you buy. Divide the field's total seed count by the seeds per bag and round up. A corn unit is standardised at 80,000 seeds regardless of weight, which is precisely so that the bag maps onto the population arithmetic instead of onto the scale. Small grains and forages are sold by weight instead, so seeds per bag is the bag weight times seeds per pound.
For drilled crops there is a fifth conversion worth carrying: bushels per acre, which is pounds per acre divided by the test weight of the seed. Wheat at 60 lb per bushel and 97 lb per acre is 1.62 bushels per acre — the unit almost every drill chart and every seed dealer will speak to you in.
Worked example: 80 acres of corn at 34,000 seeds per acre
The tag on the seed says 95% germination and 99% purity. Seed size is 1,700 seeds per pound. You are buying 80,000-seed units at $320.
- Pure live seed. 0.95 × 0.99 = 0.9405, or 94.05%.
- Seeds to drop. 34,000 ÷ 0.9405 = 36,151 seeds per acre.
- Pounds per acre. 36,151 ÷ 1,700 = 21.27 lb per acre.
- Total seed. 21.27 × 80 = 1,701 lb for the field.
- Total seeds. 36,151 × 80 = 2,892,080 seeds.
- Units. 2,892,080 ÷ 80,000 = 36.15 units, so you order 37 units.
- Cost per acre. $320 × 36.15 ÷ 80 = $320 × 0.4519 = $144.60 per acre at the exact rate.
- Invoice. 37 units × $320 = $11,840. The extra 0.85 of a unit is $272 of carry-over seed, not waste.
Now see what the PLS adjustment was worth. Ignore it and you would have ordered 34,000 ÷ 80,000 × 80 = 34 units and dropped 34,000 seeds. At 94.05% PLS that establishes about 31,977 plants — a shortfall of roughly 2,000 plants per acre against target, from a correction that took one multiplication.
Reading the result and sanity-checking it
Check the pounds per acre against the crop's normal range before you calibrate anything. Corn lands between roughly 15 and 30 lb per acre at typical populations and seed sizes. Soybeans run 50 to 75 lb. Winter wheat is usually 90 to 150 lb — 1.5 to 2.5 bushels. Alfalfa is 15 to 25 lb, and a cool-season lawn or pasture grass mix might be 5 to 10 lb of a fine-seeded species. If your answer is outside the range for your crop by a factor of two or more, the seeds-per-pound figure is the first thing to re-read.
Then look at the cost per acre, because seed is usually the largest or second-largest single line in a row-crop budget and it is one of the few you commit to before you know anything about the season. A change in target population moves it proportionally, so it belongs in your break-even price calculation alongside fertiliser and land.
The rate you calculate here is what you should be metering, and it is worth checking that the machine agrees. Calibrate a drill by catching the seed from a known number of feet of one row and weighing it: for a 15-foot drill, 1/100 acre is 29 feet of travel, and the weight caught times 100 is your pounds per acre. Do not trust the chart on the lid — chart settings assume a seed density and a flow characteristic that your treated, inoculated, differently sized lot may not share.
Finally, plan to verify. Two or three weeks after planting, count the stand with the 1/1,000-acre method and compare it against the drop rate you used here. The ratio is your field emergence, and once you have two or three seasons of it for your soils, it is the most valuable number in the whole calculation.

Where seed orders go wrong
- Using last year's pounds per acre with this year's seed lot. Seeds per pound changes between lots and between seed size grades. Pounds per acre is an output, not a setting.
- Confusing germination with field emergence. Germination is a warm laboratory test. Field emergence is what happens in your seedbed and is always lower. Correct for both, and multiply the corrections rather than adding them.
- Ignoring purity on forage and cover-crop seed. Row-crop seed is nearly pure; a bag of pasture mix may be 15% inert matter by weight. Forage seed is often sold and priced on a PLS basis for exactly this reason.
- Buying against deeded acres. Roads, waterways, tree lines and headlands are not planted. Check the planted figure before you multiply.
- Forgetting that seed is bought in whole bags. The invoice rounds up, so cost per acre at the exact rate and cost per acre after rounding are different numbers on small fields.
- Trusting the drill chart instead of calibrating. Seed treatment, inoculant and seed size all change how a lot flows. Catch and weigh the seed from a measured distance before you commit the field.
PLS pricing, variable rate, and when to use a different tool
Forage and conservation seed is frequently sold on a pure live seed basis, meaning the price is quoted per pound of PLS rather than per pound of bag. When it is, the vendor has already done the germination and purity division for you, and you should untick the adjustment here so you do not apply it twice — a double adjustment on 80% PLS seed would over-order by 25%.
Variable-rate seeding changes the target by management zone rather than the arithmetic. Run this calculator once per zone with its own target population and area, then add the bag counts. The per-zone answers are exact; only the total rounds.
Two related jobs need different tools. If you are trying to decide what target population to plant in the first place, that is an agronomic response question answered by local plot data, not by this conversion. And if you have already planted and want to know what you got, count the stand rather than recalculating the rate. The rate tells you what left the box; only a count tells you what is growing.
One last piece of bookkeeping: seed you carry over is an asset, not an expense. Store it dry and cool, retest germination before the next season — germination falls in storage, and a fresh warm germination test from a state seed lab costs very little against the risk of seeding a whole field from a lot that has lost ten points. The fertiliser side of the budget deserves the same treatment: both are committed early, and both scale directly with the acreage figure you started from.
