Mulch is sold by volume and applied by depth
You measure a bed in square feet, but mulch is sold in cubic yards or cubic-foot bags. The bridge between the two is depth, and the whole calculation is one multiplication and one unit conversion: area times depth gives volume, and 324 converts square-feet-inches into cubic yards.
Depth is the decision that costs money. Doubling a bed from 2 inches to 4 doubles the order, so on 1,000 square feet the difference between those two depths is 6.2 cubic yards against 12.3, and the second order costs exactly twice the first. It is worth deciding the depth deliberately rather than ordering “a couple of yards” and spreading whatever arrives.
Mulch earns its place by doing four things: it blocks light so weed seeds cannot establish, slows evaporation from the soil surface, moderates soil temperature swings, and keeps mowers and strimmers away from trunks. Depth is what determines whether the first of those works. Under about 2 inches, enough light reaches the soil that weeds come through anyway; beyond about 4 inches on a coarse bark you start to hold the surface wet and, on fine mulches, to shed water rather than let it soak in. Two to four inches is where nearly all extension guidance lands, with the shallow end for fine-textured products and shallow-rooted plantings.
Where the 324 comes from
A cubic yard is 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 cubic feet. Spread over a floor at a depth measured in inches, a volume in cubic feet covers area × depth ÷ 12 because there are 12 inches in a foot. Put the two together: cubic yards = area × depth ÷ 12 ÷ 27 = area × depth ÷ 324.
So 324 is 27 × 12 and nothing else. It is not padding for settling or spillage. Two convenient facts drop out of it. First, one cubic yard spread 1 inch deep covers exactly 324 square feet, so coverage at any other depth is 324 divided by that depth: 162 square feet at 2 inches, 108 at 3, 81 at 4. Second, a cubic yard is 13.5 standard 2-cubic-foot bags — 27 ÷ 2 — which is the number that decides whether you drive a truck or fill a car boot.
Areas come first, and the shape only changes how you get there. A rectangle is length times width. A circular bed or tree ring is π times the radius squared, which for a 20 foot ring is π × 102 = 314 square feet. An irregular bed is best broken into rectangles and triangles, measured separately and added — the same approach a field area calculation takes on a bigger scale. Curved borders are forgiving: measure the average width along the run rather than trying to be exact, because you will order in half-yard steps anyway.
Worked example: a 40 ft × 12 ft foundation bed at 3 inches
You are refreshing a foundation bed 40 feet long and averaging 12 feet deep, at 3 inches of shredded hardwood. Bulk mulch is $45 a yard with a $75 delivery fee; bags are 2 cubic feet at $4.50.
- Area. 40 × 12 = 480 square feet.
- Cubic feet. 480 × 3 ÷ 12 = 120 ft³.
- Cubic yards. 120 ÷ 27 = 4.44 yd³. The one-step version: 480 × 3 ÷ 324 = 4.44.
- Bags. 120 ÷ 2 = 60 bags, since 120 ÷ 2 = 60 and a cubic yard is 13.5 of those bags.
- Coverage check. One yard covers 324 ÷ 3 = 108 square feet at this depth, and 480 ÷ 108 = 4.44 yards. The two methods agree, as they must.
- Bulk cost. 4.444 × $45 = $200, plus $75 delivery = $275.
- Bagged cost. 60 × $4.50 = $270.
At these prices bagged wins by $5 on this job, entirely because of the delivery fee — the mulch itself is $45 a yard bulk against $60.75 a yard bagged (13.5 bags × $4.50). You can find the crossover exactly: bulk costs 45y + 75 and bags cost 60.75y, which are equal when 15.75y = 75, so y = 4.76 cubic yards. Below that, bagged wins; above it, bulk does. Collect the mulch yourself and the $75 disappears, so bulk wins at every size. That crossover is why the calculator prices both.
Reading the result and ordering sensibly
Round the yardage up to the next half yard, which is how bulk yards are usually sold. A calculation of 4.44 yards becomes an order of 4.5. Landscape suppliers measure with a loader bucket rather than a scale, so treat the delivered quantity as approximate and give yourself the small margin rather than stopping three square feet short of the end of the bed.
Weigh the load before you take it home. Mulch weight varies with material and moisture, but a cubic yard of bark or wood mulch is heavy enough to matter for a half-ton pickup, and wet mulch is considerably heavier than dry. Ask your supplier what their product runs per yard when it is wet, and do not fill a small truck to the top of the bed sides.
Bags against bulk is arithmetic, not preference. Divide the bag price by the bag volume to get a per-cubic-foot price, then multiply by 27: a $4.50 bag of 2 cubic feet is $60.75 a yard. Compare that with the yard price plus delivery divided by the yards you need. Bulk almost always wins on the material and loses on the delivery fee, so the crossover point moves with job size — and the fee is a fixed cost you can sometimes avoid by collecting.
Existing mulch counts. If a bed already carries 2 inches of intact mulch and you want 3 total, you only need 1 inch of new material — a third of the order. Measure what is there by pushing a screwdriver down to soil, and top up rather than rebuilding. Beds that get a full 3 inches every spring accumulate a deep, matted layer within a few years, which is exactly the condition that starves roots of air.

The 6 inch row is included for pathways and playground surfacing, not planting beds. At 6 inches over a bed you are burying roots rather than mulching them.
Never pile mulch against a trunk
Mulch heaped into a cone around a tree trunk keeps the bark permanently damp, which encourages rot at the root collar, invites bark-chewing rodents through the winter, and can lead to roots circling within the mulch instead of growing into the soil. Spread mulch in a flat ring that stops a few inches short of the trunk flare, so you can still see where the trunk widens into the roots. The correct shape is a doughnut, not a volcano — and the ring should be wide, ideally out toward the drip line, rather than deep.
What throws the order off
- Measuring the whole bed when only part gets mulch. Subtract areas taken up by dense ground cover, ponds, boulders and the footprint of large shrubs if you are not mulching under them.
- Forgetting the mulch already there. Order for the additional depth, not the finished depth, or you build a matted layer year after year.
- Confusing cubic feet with cubic yards. The ratio is 27, so a mix-up multiplies or divides your order by 27. If an answer looks absurd, this is usually why.
- Assuming every bag is 2 ft³. Fine mulches, rubber mulch and premium composts are often 1 or 1.5 ft³ at a similar price, which changes the per-yard comparison sharply.
- Ignoring settling and decomposition. Fine mulches compact and organic mulches break down, so a bed at 3 inches in April measures less by autumn. Top up rather than over-applying now.
- Overlooking the delivery fee. On jobs under about three yards a flat delivery charge can wipe out the entire bulk saving. Price both, which is what the two cost outputs are for.
Choosing a material, and where mulch fits
The volume arithmetic is identical for every loose landscape material sold by the yard, so the same calculation sizes an order of compost, topsoil, decorative stone, playground chips or bark fines. What changes is the sensible depth and the weight per yard. Compost is typically worked in at a much shallower layer than bark mulch; decorative stone is heavy enough that a yard can approach or exceed a ton, which matters for both the truck and the driveway.
Material choice is mostly a trade between longevity and soil benefit. Shredded hardwood knits together and stays put on slopes; pine bark nuggets last longer but float and wash; wood chips from an arborist are cheap or free and excellent under trees; straw suits vegetable beds. Organic mulches all break down and feed the soil, which is why they need topping up — a stone mulch does not, but it adds nothing to the soil either and radiates heat back at the plants above it.
