Every quantity is an integer count of strips, which is why the two roundings go in opposite directions: you always need a whole extra drop to cover a part-width, and you can never get a part-drop out of a roll.

Why wallpaper is counted in drops, not square feet

Area estimating fails for wallpaper, and it fails in the direction that leaves you short. A 20.5 in × 33 ft double roll holds 56.4 sq ft of paper, but you can never use all of it: the paper comes off the bolt in one continuous strip, and every strip you cut has to run the full height of the wall in one piece. Cut a 105 in drop from a 396 in roll and you get three drops with 81 in left over — enough paper for another two-thirds of a drop, and worth nothing.

So the real question is never "how many square feet?" It is a chain of four integers: how many drops the wall needs, how long each drop has to be cut, how many of those cuts fit in one roll, and how many rolls that makes. Every one of those steps rounds, and every rounding is in the same direction — against you. That is why area-based estimates routinely come in one or two rolls short on a patterned paper.

Pattern repeat is the multiplier that makes the gap large. On a random-match paper you cut the wall height plus a trim allowance and that is all. On a 21 in straight-match repeat with an 8 ft wall you cut 105 in instead of 100 in, and the roll yields the same three drops either way. Push the repeat to 27 in and the cut becomes 108 in; still three drops. Push the wall to 9 ft and the 21 in repeat forces a 126 in cut, and the roll yields only three drops instead of the four a random paper would give. Small changes in the paper you choose can move the order by 25% or more.

The four steps, and what each one hides

Drops across the wall. Divide the wall width by the roll width and round up: D = ⌈width ÷ roll width⌉. Round up because a 3 in sliver of bare wall still needs a whole strip. For a whole room, use the perimeter. Do not deduct windows: you still paper above and below them, and the offcut from a window drop is rarely long enough to be a full drop elsewhere. Do deduct doorways — a 36 in door in 20.5 in paper saves ⌊36 ÷ 20.5⌋ = 1 whole drop, which is the honest deduction.

Cut length per drop. Start with the wall height plus a trim allowance, normally 2 in top and 2 in bottom so the strip can be slid up or down into position and then trimmed at both ends. On a random match that is your cut length. On a straight match, every strip must start at the same point in the pattern, so the cut length rounds up to a whole number of repeats: ⌈(height + trim) ÷ repeat⌉ × repeat. Each drop therefore carries somewhere between zero and one full repeat of waste. On a drop match (also called half-drop or offset), alternate strips start half a repeat further down the roll, so each strip costs an additional half repeat — the conservative trade allowance this calculator uses.

Drops per roll. Divide the roll length by the cut length and round down: dr = ⌊roll length ÷ cut length⌋. This is where the paper is really lost, and it is why two papers with identical square footage can need different numbers of rolls.

Rolls to order. N = ⌈D ÷ dr × (1 + waste)⌉. The waste allowance is applied before the final round-up, not after, so it never adds a phantom roll on top of a number that was already rounded. Ten percent covers a mis-cut or two and leaves a length for a future repair; 15% is sensible in a room with a stair, a chimney breast or several corners.

Worked example: a 12 × 10 ft bedroom with a 21 in repeat

A 12 ft by 10 ft bedroom with 8 ft ceilings, one standard 3 ft door, papered in a straight-match paper with a 21 in repeat on 20.5 in × 33 ft double rolls at $45 each. You want a 10% waste allowance and 2 in of trim at each end.

  1. Perimeter. 2 × (12 + 10) = 44 ft = 528 in.
  2. Gross drops. 528 ÷ 20.5 = 25.76, rounded up = 26 drops.
  3. Door deduction. 36 ÷ 20.5 = 1.76, rounded down = 1 drop saved. Net = 25 drops.
  4. Cut length. Height 96 in + 4 in trim = 100 in. 100 ÷ 21 = 4.76, rounded up to 5 repeats, so 5 × 21 = 105 in per drop.
  5. Drops per roll. Roll length 33 ft = 396 in. 396 ÷ 105 = 3.77, rounded down = 3 drops per roll. The remaining 81 in of each roll is offcut.
  6. Rolls. 25 ÷ 3 = 8.33 rolls of paper on the wall. With 10% waste: 8.33 × 1.10 = 9.17, rounded up = 10 double rolls.
  7. Cost. 10 × $45 = $450.
  8. Unused paper. You bought 10 × 396 × 20.5 = 81,180 sq in and hung 25 × 105 × 20.5 = 53,812.5 sq in, so 27,367.5 sq in — 190 sq ft — is offcut, trim and spare.

That 190 sq ft looks alarming next to a net wall area of 328 sq ft, and it is the honest cost of a 21 in repeat on an 8 ft wall. Switch to a random-match grasscloth and the cut drops to 100 in, four drops come out of every roll, and the same room takes 7 rolls instead of 10.

Reading the result before you order

Check the drops-per-roll figure first. If it is 1, almost half of every roll is going in the bin and you should look for the same design on a longer bolt or a shorter repeat. If it is 3 or 4 you are in normal territory. If it is 0, no bolt yields a full-height strip and the calculator returns no roll count at all — that combination of wall height and roll length cannot be papered without a horizontal seam, which is not acceptable practice on a feature wall.

Order everything in one dye lot. Wallpaper is printed in batches and colour varies measurably between them. The bolt label carries a run or batch number; every roll in your order must share it. This is the single strongest argument for a generous waste allowance: a second order placed three weeks later will not match, and the mismatch shows most on a plain ground.

Check what a "roll" means at your retailer. American papers are almost always priced and sold as double rolls even when the label says "single roll" for the pattern data. If the price you enter is per single roll but the length you enter is a double roll, the cost figure will be exactly half of what you pay. Read the length off the same label as the price.

Peel-and-stick behaves differently. It is normally sold in shorter, wider panels, has no paste-and-book stage, and is far more forgiving of a re-hang — but it still cuts in full-height drops with the same repeat arithmetic, so the calculator applies. Reduce the trim allowance to 2 in total, since you position the panel by peeling rather than sliding.

Area = width × length. Drops per roll = ⌊length ÷ 105 in⌋. Wall covered = drops per roll × width. Note how the single roll yields one drop from 198 in, wasting 93 in — which is why paper is sold in double rolls.

Measure the wall height at more than one point

Floors settle and ceilings sag. Measure the wall height at both ends and in the middle of every wall, and use the largest figure as your cut length; a strip cut 1 in short cannot be rescued. On a stairwell, the drops are different lengths and the perimeter method breaks down entirely — measure each drop individually, take the longest as your cut length, and add the drops by hand. The same applies to a room with a raked or vaulted ceiling.

Estimating mistakes that leave you short

  • Deducting windows. You still paper above and below a window, and the offcuts are rarely full-height. Deduct only genuine full-height openings.
  • Using the paper's square footage. The 56 sq ft on the label is the paper in the bolt, not the paper you can hang. Only the drops-per-roll figure tells you the usable amount.
  • Ignoring the match type. A drop match on a large repeat can cost a whole extra roll on a small room. It is printed on the label, usually as a symbol rather than a word.
  • Buying a second order later. Different dye lot, visible colour shift. Order the full quantity plus the waste allowance in one go.
  • Forgetting the corners. Professionals wrap about 1/4 to 1/2 in around an internal corner and start a fresh plumb strip on the new wall, which consumes part of a drop at every corner. On a four-corner room the waste allowance absorbs this; on a room with eight corners, raise the allowance to 15%.
  • Papering over a doubtful surface. Fresh plaster needs to cure and be sized; glossy paint needs abrasion. Neither affects the roll count, but both affect whether the paper is still on the wall next year.

Where this calculator stops

This is a quantity estimator, not a hanging plan. It assumes rectangular walls of one height, vertical drops, and a paper hung from a plumb line rather than from a corner. Three jobs need something more: a stairwell, where every drop is a different length and the longest drop sets the cut; a mural or panel set, which is sold as a numbered sequence of panels for a stated wall size and is not counted in drops at all; and a ceiling, where the drops run the shorter room dimension and the pattern must be centred rather than started at a corner.

It also assumes you are buying paper rather than paste-the-wall non-woven, which changes the hanging method but not the arithmetic, and that you will hang the drops yourself or hand the number to an installer. Installers quote by the roll hung, so an accurate roll count is also an accurate labour estimate.

How many rolls of wallpaper do I need for a 12 by 10 foot room?

Ten US double rolls for a straight-match paper with a 21 in repeat on 8 ft walls, allowing 10% waste and deducting one door. The chain is: 44 ft perimeter = 528 in, needing 26 drops, less 1 for the door = 25; a 105 in cut length yields 3 drops from a 396 in roll; 25 ÷ 3 × 1.10 = 9.17, rounded up to 10. The same room in a random-match paper takes 7 rolls.

What is the difference between a straight match and a drop match?

On a straight match every strip starts at the same point in the design, so the pattern lines up level across the seam. On a drop or half-drop match, alternate strips start half a repeat lower, producing a diagonal arrangement. The practical consequence is cost: a drop match makes each strip carry roughly an extra half repeat of length, so a large-repeat drop match can add a roll or two to a room-sized order.

Should I deduct windows and doors from the wallpaper calculation?

Deduct full-height openings only. A doorway removes a whole drop when it is at least one roll-width wide; a 36 in door in 20.5 in paper saves exactly one drop. Do not deduct windows: you still paper the strip above and the strip below, and the piece cut out is almost never long enough to serve as a drop somewhere else. Leaving windows in also builds a natural cushion into the estimate.

Is a double roll twice as long as a single roll?

Yes, and that is the only difference — a US double roll is 33 ft of 20.5 in paper, a single roll 16.5 ft. Papers are described with single-roll data on the label but almost always sold and priced as double rolls, which trips up estimates constantly. Read the length and the price off the same line of the same label before entering them here.

How much waste should I allow for wallpaper?

Ten percent for a simple rectangular room, 15% where there are many corners, a chimney breast, a stair or a large pattern repeat. The allowance covers mis-cuts, a damaged strip and a length kept for future repairs. Because wallpaper is printed in dye lots that do not match between orders, the spare length is genuinely worth having; a second order placed later will be visibly different on a plain ground.

Does the pattern repeat change how many rolls I need?

It changes the cut length, and the cut length decides how many drops come out of a roll. The cut rounds up to a whole number of repeats, so each strip carries up to one repeat of offcut. Whether that costs you a roll depends on where the rounding lands: an 8 ft wall with a 21 in repeat still gives 3 drops per roll, but a 9 ft wall with the same repeat gives 3 as well, while the random-match version gives 4 in the first case.

Can I use this for peel-and-stick wallpaper?

Yes. Peel-and-stick still hangs in full-height drops with the same repeat and match arithmetic; enter the panel width and length from the product page. Two adjustments help: reduce the trim allowance to about 2 in total, since you position by peeling rather than sliding, and keep the waste allowance at 10% because a panel that grabs itself during application is usually unrecoverable.

Why does the calculator say no roll yields a full drop?

Because your cut length is longer than the roll. It happens on tall walls with short bolts — a 12 ft wall needs a 148 in cut and a 10 ft roll is only 120 in. There is no valid roll count in that case, since papering the wall would require a horizontal seam mid-drop. Look for the design on a longer commercial bolt, or choose a paper with no repeat so the cut length falls to the bare wall height plus trim.

How do I estimate a stairwell?

Measure each drop individually rather than using a perimeter. On a stair the wall height changes continuously, so mark the position of every strip along the wall, measure floor-to-ceiling at each mark, and use the longest of those as the cut length in this calculator with the drop count entered by hand as the wall width divided by roll width. Add 15% waste: stairwell work generates more offcuts than any other room.
