The room rule gives a maximum: any stock rug at or below it satisfies the border you asked for. The furniture rule gives a minimum: any stock rug at or above it satisfies the clearance. That is why the same calculator rounds down in one mode and up in the other.

What rug sizing actually decides

A rug does one of two jobs, and which job it has decides how you size it. In a living room, entry or hallway the rug defines a zone inside a larger floor, so you size it down from the walls and leave a deliberate strip of bare floor as a frame. At a dining table or under a bed the rug has to carry furniture and the movement around that furniture, so you size it up from the furniture footprint and the clearance a person needs.

Get the direction wrong and the room reads badly in a way that is hard to name but easy to see. A rug that stops short of the sofa's front legs makes the seating group look unmoored. A dining rug that ends before a pushed-back chair does makes every meal a small wrestling match with a rug edge. A bedroom rug narrower than the mattress plus a step means your feet land on cold floor, which is the entire reason the rug is there.

The calculator also reports floor coverage as a percentage, because that single number is the fastest sanity check on a rug choice. Two rooms of different shapes with the same coverage feel similarly furnished; a rug at 15% coverage in a big room reads as a doormat no matter how expensive it is.

The two rules, and why they round in opposite directions

The room rule. For a seating area, entry or runner, you start with the room and subtract twice the border, once for each side: rug length = room length − 2b, rug width = room width − 2b. The border b is a choice, not a constant. Eighteen to twenty-four inches is the usual target in a room of ordinary size, because that is roughly the width of a floorboard run or a tile course and reads as intentional. In a small room, eight to twelve inches is better; a large border in a 10 × 11 ft room shrinks the rug to something that looks accidental.

That formula gives you a maximum. Any rug at or under those dimensions leaves at least the border you asked for, so when the answer falls between two stock sizes the calculator rounds down. Rounding up would eat the border you specified.

The furniture rule. At a dining table, the rug has to stay under all four legs of a chair that has been pushed back. Twenty-four inches of pull-out on every side of the table is the trade minimum; thirty inches is generous. So rug length = table length + 2c and rug width = table width + 2c. Under a bed, the exposed sides need a walking margin of eighteen to twenty-four inches, and the rug should run past the foot of the bed by about the same, giving rug width = mattress width + 2c and rug length = mattress length + c.

That formula gives you a minimum, so here the calculator rounds up to the next stock size. Both directions matter: the same arithmetic rounded the wrong way produces a rug that fails the job it was bought for.

Orientation. Stock rugs are sold as a long dimension by a short one, and both the room and the requirement have a long and a short side. The calculator sorts both pairs before comparing them, so a queen bed needing 108 in across and 104 in along is matched against a 9 × 12 ft rug turned so its 108 in side runs across the bed. That is exactly why 9 × 12 is the standard recommendation for a queen even though the numbers look like they should fit an 8 × 10.

Worked example: a 16 × 12 ft living room

You have a 16 ft by 12 ft living room with a sofa and two chairs, and you want an 20 in border of bare oak showing all round.

  1. Convert to inches. 16 ft = 192 in, 12 ft = 144 in. Room area = 192 × 144 = 27,648 sq in, which is 192 sq ft.
  2. Apply the room rule. Length: 192 − (2 × 20) = 152 in. Width: 144 − (2 × 20) = 104 in. So the largest rug that honours the border is 152 × 104 in.
  3. Test the stock sizes against that box. A 9 × 12 ft rug is 108 × 144 in; its 108 in side exceeds the 104 in allowance, so it is out. An 8 × 10 ft rug is 96 × 120 in, and 120 ≤ 152 and 96 ≤ 104, so it fits. Nothing larger fits.
  4. Work out the real borders. Ends: (192 − 120) ÷ 2 = 36 in. Sides: (144 − 96) ÷ 2 = 24 in. Both exceed the 20 in you asked for, which is what rounding down to a stock size does.
  5. Coverage. 120 × 96 = 11,520 sq in = 80 sq ft. 80 ÷ 192 = 0.4167, so 41.7% of the floor.

At 41.7% the rug is on the small side of the usual designer target. The honest reading of that arithmetic is that a 20 in border is too ambitious for this room: drop it to 12 in and the allowance becomes 168 × 120 in, which admits the 10 × 14 ft rug at 72.9% coverage and leaves 12 in of floor on every side. That trade — border against coverage — is the real decision, and the calculator makes it visible instead of hiding it inside a recommendation.

Reading the coverage number

Coverage of 60–75% is the range most interior designers work toward in a main seating area, and it is a rule of thumb rather than a code minimum. It is the band where the rug is large enough to gather the furniture into a group while a visible margin of floor still frames it. Below about 40%, the rug reads as an island: the sofa sits on floor and the rug sits alone in the middle. Above about 90% you have effectively laid broadloom, and the border that made the rug look deliberate has gone.

Dining rooms behave differently and routinely land at 50–70%, because the requirement is driven entirely by the chair swing. Bedrooms often run high — a 9 × 12 under a queen in a 12 × 14 room is 64% — because the mattress hides a large part of the rug and only the exposed margin is doing visual work.

The three placements. All legs on needs the largest rug and gives the most settled result; every piece of the seating group stands on the rug and nothing rocks at a rug edge. Front legs on is the compromise most rooms actually use: the sofa's front legs and the chairs' front legs sit on the rug, the back legs on the floor, and the rug can be one stock size smaller. Floating — the rug clear of all furniture — only works under a coffee table in a large open room, and it is where the coverage number most often reveals that the rug is simply too small.

Whatever the placement, check the numbers against the furniture, not just the room: measure the outside width of your sofa and the spread of the chairs and confirm they land inside the recommended rectangle before you order. Coverage is rug area divided by the 192 sq ft room. Bare floor is (room dimension − rug dimension) ÷ 2. The 12 × 15 ft rug reaches wall to wall across the width, which is why the side figure is zero.

Stock sizes are nominal, and rugs are not cut to the inch

A rug sold as 8 × 10 ft is usually 7 ft 10 in by 10 ft 2 in, or some similar near miss, because hand-knotted and machine-woven goods both shrink and stretch off the loom. Manufacturers publish an actual size alongside the nominal one; use the actual size when a fit is tight. The calculator works in the nominal dimensions listed above, so if your answer leaves under about two inches of margin somewhere, treat it as a coin flip and check the maker's exact measurement.

Mistakes that produce the wrong rug

  • Measuring the room instead of the seating area. In an open-plan space there is no wall to measure from. Size the rug to the furniture group with a 12–18 in margin beyond the outermost legs, and ignore the room dimensions entirely.
  • Forgetting the chair pull-out at a dining table. A 24 in allowance on every side is the number that matters, and it is measured from the table top edge, not the pedestal or the leg line. Round tables need the same allowance measured from the widest point.
  • Sizing a bedroom rug to the bed frame. Use the mattress dimensions. Frames, footboards and platform surrounds vary by several inches and none of them is what your foot lands on.
  • Ignoring the door swing. An interior door needs roughly 1/2 to 3/4 in of clearance over a rug. A thick rug in a doorway either stops the door or gets shaved by it; check the pile height against the undercut before ordering.
  • Buying the size that fits the old rug. Replacing like for like preserves a mistake. Re-derive the size from the current furniture, especially after a sofa change.
  • Skipping the rug pad. A pad adds about 1/4 in of height, holds the rug flat and roughly doubles its working life. Cut it about an inch smaller than the rug on every side so it never shows.

Where this fits with the rest of the room

Rug size is one of four dimensions that decide whether a furnished room looks resolved, and they interact. Custom sizing carries a premium over stock goods of similar construction at the same retailer, so it is worth checking whether shifting your border by a few inches lets a stock size do the job. Key terms

Border
The strip of bare finished floor between the rug edge and the wall. It frames the rug and is a design choice, typically 8–24 in depending on room size.
Pull-out clearance
The distance a dining chair travels backwards as someone stands up, measured from the table edge. Twenty-four inches keeps all four chair legs on the rug.
Coverage

Frequently asked questions

What size rug do I need for a 12 by 16 foot living room?

A 9 × 12 ft rug is the usual answer, giving 56% coverage with 24 in of floor at the ends and 18 in at the sides. A 10 × 14 ft goes to 72.9% coverage with 12 in all round, which suits an all-legs-on placement. An 8 × 10 ft leaves 36 in and 24 in of bare floor and works only if your seating group is compact and you want a generous frame.

Should the rug go under all the furniture or just the front legs?

Front legs on the rug is the standard compromise and works in most rooms. It anchors the seating group without demanding the largest rug in the range, and it lets you drop one stock size — typically from a 9 × 12 to an 8 × 10. Use all legs on when the room is large and you want the group to feel like a separate space. Float the rug only under a coffee table in an open plan, where nothing is meant to be anchored.

What size rug goes under a queen bed?

A 9 × 12 ft rug, run across the bed so the 108 in dimension spans the mattress width. A queen mattress is 60 in wide; adding 24 in of walking margin on each side needs 108 in across, and no smaller stock size offers 108 in on its short dimension. An 8 × 10 ft works if you accept about 18 in of margin and let the top third of the rug sit under the nightstands.

How much floor should a rug cover?

Sixty to seventy-five percent is the range designers commonly aim for in a seating area, as a rule of thumb rather than a rule. Below 40% the rug stops gathering the furniture and reads as a separate object. Above 90% you have covered the floor and lost the border that makes a rug look chosen rather than fitted. Dining rooms sit lower, around 50–70%, because the size is set by chair clearance instead.

Why did the calculator round down for my living room but up for my dining room?

Because the two rules point in opposite directions. The living-room rule sets a maximum — the largest rug that still leaves the border you asked for — so rounding up would eat the border. The dining rule sets a minimum — the smallest rug that still catches a pushed-back chair — so rounding down would let chair legs fall off the edge. The same arithmetic, rounded the wrong way, fails the job in both cases.

Does the rug have to run the same direction as the room?

Usually yes: match the rug's long side to the room's long side, which is what the calculator assumes. The exception is a bed, where the rug runs across the mattress and its long side crosses the room's long axis, and a hall runner, which follows the traffic path. If your seating group is turned against the room's axis, size the rug to the group and orient it to the furniture.

What if no stock size fits my room?

The calculator falls back to the closest available size and warns you. In a very small room the border you asked for is usually the problem — reduce it to 8–12 in and a stock size will appear. If the requirement is genuinely between sizes, custom binding of broadloom carpet gives you any dimension you like, at a premium over stock goods and with a lead time of a few weeks.

Can I use two smaller rugs instead of one large one?

Only when they define genuinely separate zones, such as a seating group and a reading corner in one long room. Two rugs pushed together to fake a larger one always shows: the seam catches feet, the piles wear at different rates and the edges curl. If the coverage figure says you need 70% and your budget says 40%, a larger low-pile flatweave costs less than two mid-pile rugs and looks deliberate.

How much clearance does a rug need under a door?

About 1/2 to 3/4 in between the bottom of the door and the top of the rug pile. Measure the existing undercut, add your rug's pile height plus roughly 1/4 in for a pad, and compare. A 1/2 in pile plus a 1/4 in pad needs three-quarters of an inch of undercut before the door starts to drag, and doors are far easier to trim before the rug arrives than after.
