Why box counts are a volume problem, not a room problem
Every published "boxes for a two-bedroom" figure is really one person's guess at two things: how much volume a two-bedroom household contains, and how that volume splits across carton sizes. Making both explicit is the whole job.
The first number is the packable volume — the cubic feet of goods that actually go into cartons. It deliberately excludes furniture, mattresses, appliances and anything you will wrap and carry rather than box. That exclusion is why the figures here look small next to moving-truck capacities: a three-bedroom house might need a 26 ft truck of about 1,700 cu ft, while only a fraction of that is boxable.
The second is the mix. Cartons come in four standard sizes, and the choice between them is decided by weight, not by whether the item fits. Books, tinned food and crockery go in 1.5 cu ft small cartons because a 4.5 cu ft carton of books weighs about 100 lb and will either injure someone or fail at the seams. Bedding, cushions and lampshades go in 6.0 cu ft extra-large cartons because they are almost weightless. A household that is mostly books needs roughly twice as many cartons as one of identical volume that is mostly linen.
Specialty cartons are counted differently again, because their limit is geometric rather than volumetric. A wardrobe box holds a fixed length of rail, a dish pack holds the contents of about two cabinets, and a picture box holds a few flat items. Multiplying volume by a share would give the wrong answer for all three.
How the estimate is built, step by step
Start with the baseline volume. The home-size selector carries a cubic-foot figure in its own label, so nothing is hidden: a two-bedroom home starts at 150 cu ft of boxables. These are working figures of the kind moving estimators use, not measurements of your home, which is exactly why the next two adjustments exist.
Adjust for occupants. Bedrooms measure the building; people fill it. Each occupant beyond the second adds 25 cu ft of clothes, books, papers and personal effects. Four people in a one-bedroom flat genuinely own more than two people in the same flat, and the room count cannot see that.
Adjust for density. This is the single most important input and the one people get wrong, because they judge it by how tidy the rooms look. Judge it by opening the closets, the loft hatch and the garage shelving. Minimal is 0.75×, average is 1.0×, packed is 1.35× — a spread of nearly a factor of two between the extremes.
Split by carton size. Multiply the volume by each size's share and divide by that carton's interior volume, then round up. The balanced mix sends 30% of volume to small cartons, 35% to medium, 25% to large and 10% to extra-large. Because small cartons hold a quarter of what an extra-large holds, that 30% share produces far more boxes than its share of volume suggests.
Count the specialty cartons from their own drivers. Dish packs are cabinets ÷ 2, wardrobe boxes are linear feet of hanging rail ÷ 2, picture boxes are framed items ÷ 3. Each is rounded up.
Derive the consumables from the carton count. One 55 yd roll of 2 in tape closes about 15 cartons, sealing both top and bottom with a centre strip and two side strips. Packing paper runs about one pound per four cartons for a normally mixed household — heavier if you are wrapping a lot of glass. Bubble wrap is reserved for crockery and glazed frames, at roughly 10 sq ft per dish pack and 5 sq ft per picture box.
Worked example: a two-bedroom flat, two occupants, average density
Take the defaults: a 2-bedroom home (150 cu ft baseline), two occupants, average density, balanced mix, 12 kitchen cabinets, 12 ft of hanging clothes and 6 framed pictures.
- Baseline volume. 150 cu ft, with no occupant adjustment because there are exactly two people. Density 1.0 leaves it at 150 cu ft.
- Small cartons. 30% of 150 = 45 cu ft. Divided by 1.5 cu ft: 30 small boxes.
- Medium cartons. 35% of 150 = 52.5 cu ft ÷ 3.0 = 17.5, rounded up to 18 medium boxes.
- Large cartons. 25% of 150 = 37.5 cu ft ÷ 4.5 = 8.33, rounded up to 9 large boxes.
- Extra-large cartons. 10% of 150 = 15 cu ft ÷ 6.0 = 2.5, rounded up to 3 XL boxes. Standard total: 30 + 18 + 9 + 3 = 60.
- Specialty. 12 cabinets ÷ 2 = 6 dish packs. 12 ft ÷ 2 = 6 wardrobe boxes. 6 pictures ÷ 3 = 2 picture boxes. Total 14.
- All cartons. 60 + 14 = 74 boxes.
- Consumables. Tape: 74 ÷ 15 = 4.93, so 5 rolls. Paper: 74 ÷ 4 = 18.5, so 19 lb. Bubble wrap: 6 × 10 + 2 × 5 = 70 sq ft ÷ 50 = 1.4, so 2 rolls.
- Cost. 60 × $2.00 = $120, plus 14 × $9.00 = $126, plus 5 × $3.50 = $17.50, plus 19 × $1.20 = $22.80, plus 2 × $18 = $36. Total $322.30.
Notice where the money is. The 14 specialty cartons cost $126 against $120 for all 60 standard ones — 39% of the total spend on 19% of the boxes. That is the line to attack if the budget matters, and renting wardrobe boxes from the mover is the usual way to do it.
How to read the number and what to buy
Treat the total as a target, not a purchase order. Buy about 80% of it up front and hold the rest as a top-up, because the density selector is the largest source of error and you will know within two rooms whether you chose it correctly. Most box retailers and every mover will take back unused, unassembled flat cartons.
Check the packing rate against your calendar. A practised packer fills roughly four to six cartons an hour on ordinary contents and far fewer on a kitchen. At 74 boxes, that is somewhere between twelve and eighteen hours of work — three evenings and a weekend, not the Saturday morning most people allocate. Watch the weight, not the fill line. The industry limit is that no carton should exceed about 50 lb, which is why the size mix exists at all. A 1.5 cu ft small carton filled with hardbacks is already near that limit; the same carton filled with towels is under 10 lb. If you find yourself filling large cartons with dense goods, shift your mix selection to "books and kitchen heavy" and re-run — that change alone raises the two-bedroom count from 60 standard cartons to 69, because the same 150 cu ft is now carried in more, smaller boxes.
The specialty counts are the ones to sanity-check by eye. Walk to the wardrobe and measure the rail with a tape rather than estimating; people routinely under-report hanging clothes by half because they forget coat cupboards and the second wardrobe. Six feet of extra rail is three more wardrobe boxes and $27 at the default price.
Compare the supply cost against the alternative. Free supermarket and liquor-store boxes cost nothing but are inconsistent in size, often food-soiled, and rarely double-walled, so they are a poor choice for books and crockery specifically. A reasonable middle path is free cartons for linen and clothes, bought double-walled cartons for the kitchen and the library.

Volumes are computed from the nominal dimensions: a 16 × 12 × 12 in carton is 2,304 cu in ÷ 1,728 = 1.33 cu ft of true interior, which the trade rounds to the 1.5 cu ft nameplate. This calculator uses the nameplate figures, which is what suppliers list.
Estimating mistakes that leave you short on moving day
- Judging density by how tidy the rooms look. Open the closets, the loft and the garage. Storage volume, not floor space, drives the number.
- Under-measuring hanging clothes. Measure every rail in the home with a tape, including coat cupboards and the spare-room wardrobe. This is the most under-reported input here.
- Packing books in large cartons. A 4.5 cu ft carton of hardbacks is roughly 100 lb — over the safe limit, and the base will fail before the tape does.
- Buying single-wall cartons for crockery. A dish pack is double-walled for a reason. The saving is a few dollars; the loss is a dinner service.
- Forgetting the last-day box. The kettle, the chargers, the bedding you slept in. Add two or three cartons beyond whatever this calculator returns.
- Under-buying tape. Fifteen cartons per roll assumes clean, straight sealing. Buy an extra roll — running out mid-kitchen at 9 pm is the classic failure.
- Using printed newspaper as packing paper. The ink transfers to crockery and unfinished wood. Unprinted newsprint costs little and is what the pound figure here prices.
What the volume figures are and are not
The cubic-foot baselines behind the home-size selector are working rules of thumb of the kind moving estimators use for a first pass, not measurements and not a published standard. They are exposed in the option labels precisely so you can override them by choosing a different home size than yours if your household does not look typical — a minimalist four-bedroom house may genuinely be a "2 bedroom, packed" for this purpose.
What is not a rule of thumb is the arithmetic downstream: the carton volumes, the divisions and the rounding are exact, and if your volume estimate is right the carton counts are right.
Where this sits in the rest of the move
Box counts are the second question of a move, not the first. There is no governing standard for carton sizing; the four nameplate volumes are a trade convention that carton manufacturers and van lines converged on, and they are consistent enough between suppliers that dividing by them is safe. The one figure with an outside basis is the 50 lb per carton ceiling, which comes from manual-handling practice rather than from packaging.
