A due date is a distribution, not an appointment
Gestation length is an average with a spread around it, and treating the projected date as a promise is the fastest way to be caught out. Cattle average 283 days but individual pregnancies routinely run a week either side. Mares average 340 days with a range wide enough that experienced breeders watch from 320 and are not alarmed at 360. Ewes and does are tighter, at 147 and 150 days with only a few days of usual variation, and sows are tightest of all — the old rule of three months, three weeks and three days is 114 days, and pigs hold to it remarkably closely.
So the useful output is not one date but a window. This calculator gives the projected date and one standard deviation either side, which brackets roughly two births in three. Plan facilities, bedding and labour cover for the window; plan the vaccination and dry-off jobs against the single date, because those are done a set number of days ahead and a few days of slippage does not matter.
Several things shift gestation length systematically rather than randomly. Male offspring gestate slightly longer than female in cattle and horses. Twins and large litters shorten it. Older, higher-parity females tend to run slightly longer than heifers or gilts. Breed matters materially in cattle: Brahman and Brahman-influenced cattle carry noticeably longer than British breeds, and continental breeds sit between them. Season influences mares, with pregnancies that end in early spring tending to run longer than those ending in summer. Why the arithmetic is day counting rather than month counting
Adding gestation to a service date sounds trivial, and it is — provided you count days rather than months. Month arithmetic breaks in two places. Months have different lengths, so "nine months and ten days" is not a fixed interval; and February has a different length in leap years, so the same rule applied to two pregnancies a year apart can land on different day counts.
This calculator converts both dates to a serial day number, does the arithmetic in integers, and converts back. That handles leap years exactly, including the century rule that makes 1900 and 2100 common years while 2000 is a leap year. A mare bred on 20 March 2027 and carrying 340 days foals on 23 February 2028 — a calculation that must count the 29 February that has not yet arrived correctly to get 2028 right at all.
Three quantities come out of the same subtraction. Days to go is the due date minus the count-from date; it goes negative once the due date passes, which is exactly what you want when reviewing an overdue female. Days since breeding is the count-from date minus the service date. Proportion of gestation elapsed is the second divided by the gestation length, and it is the number that maps onto nutritional stage: the last third of gestation is when fetal growth accelerates sharply, and it is the point at which a dry cow ration or a late-pregnancy ewe ration needs to step up.
The management lead date is the due date minus your chosen lead time. Sixty days is the conventional dry period for a dairy cow. Two to four weeks before lambing is when ewes are usually moved and given their clostridial booster. A week before farrowing is when sows go to the crate. Set the lead time to the job you are scheduling and read the date off the table.
Worked example: a cow bred on 1 March
A cow is artificially inseminated on 1 March 2026. You are reviewing the herd calendar on 1 December 2026 and want the calving date, the dry-off date at 60 days, and how far along she is.
- Gestation length. Cattle average 283 days, with about ±6 days of normal variation.
- Day count of the service date. 1 March 2026 is day 60 of the year: 31 in January plus 28 in February plus 1.
- Add the gestation. 60 + 283 = day 343 of 2026.
- Convert back. Cumulative days to the end of November are 334, so day 343 is 343 − 334 = 9 December 2026.
- Days to go on 1 December. 9 − 1 = 8 days.
- Days since breeding. 283 − 8 = 275 days.
- Proportion of gestation. 275 ÷ 283 = 97.2% — deep into the final third.
- Dry-off at 60 days before due. 9 December minus 60 days is 10 October 2026, which was 52 days ago. The tile reads −52, meaning that job should already be done.
- Calving window. 9 December ± 6 days: 3 to 15 December. Have the pen ready from the 3rd.
The negative lead figure is the useful part of this example. A herd calendar that only shows due dates hides jobs whose window has already closed; showing the lead date as a signed offset makes an overdue dry-off obvious at a glance.
Using the result, and what to do when reality disagrees
The first check is against the animal. A female that shows no sign of approaching parturition well past the top of her range usually means the recorded service date is not the one that took — a repeat breeding that went unobserved is far more common than a genuinely extended pregnancy. Pregnancy diagnosis by ultrasound or palpation dates the fetus directly and will resolve it; in cattle, ultrasound from about 28 days and rectal palpation from about 35 days are the routine methods.
The second check is on the record itself. For natural service in a group, you often have a range rather than a date: the bull went in on one day and came out weeks later. Enter the turn-in date to get the earliest possible due date and the turn-out date to get the latest, and plan for the whole span. Synchronised or fixed-time AI programmes give you a single date and a much tighter calving spread, which is most of their value.
The third use is nutritional. The proportion-of-gestation figure tells you when to change rations. Roughly the last two months of a cattle pregnancy account for a large share of total fetal growth, and the same pattern holds across species — late gestation is when energy and protein demand climb steeply and when body condition is hardest to add. In sheep, twin-bearing ewes in the last six weeks are the classic pregnancy toxaemia risk, which is entirely a late-gestation energy problem. Use the due date to work backwards to when the ration must change, not just to when the lambs arrive.

Where due-date planning goes wrong
- Recording the wrong service date. A repeat breeding that nobody saw is the most common cause of a female who is "overdue". Confirm with pregnancy diagnosis rather than waiting.
- Treating the projected date as certain. Two births in three fall within one standard deviation; one in three does not. Have the pen ready from the early end of the range.
- Counting months instead of days. Months are not equal and February changes length in leap years. Count days.
- Ignoring breed effects in cattle. The spread between breed averages is larger than the within-breed standard deviation, so using a single 283 for a mixed herd puts some groups out systematically.
- Scheduling dry-off from the calving date rather than the due date. Dry-off has to happen before calving, so it must be planned from the projection and adjusted, not from an event that has not occurred.
- Forgetting that late gestation raises requirements. The ration change is scheduled from the due date. Setting it late costs body condition that is difficult to recover during lactation.
- Using a group turn-in date as a single due date. With natural service over several weeks, you have a window as wide as the breeding period. Run the calculation on both ends.
Pregnancy diagnosis and breeding-season planning
A projected date is only as good as the service record. Pregnancy diagnosis replaces the projection with a measurement: transrectal ultrasound in cattle detects pregnancy from around 28 days and can age the fetus and sex it in a defined window; manual palpation is reliable somewhat later. In sheep and goats, transabdominal ultrasound around 45 to 90 days both confirms pregnancy and counts fetuses, which is far more useful than the date alone because it lets you feed singles and twins differently. In mares, early ultrasound is standard practice partly to detect twins in time to reduce them.
Running the calculation the other way is just as valuable. If you want calves on the ground from 15 March, subtract 283 days and the bull goes in on 5 June. Sheep and goat producers do the same to target lambing to grass growth or to a market window, and a compact breeding season produces a compact lambing, which concentrates labour where it does the most good. Because the gestation length is fixed, the breeding date is the only lever you have over the birth date.
Record keeping is what makes any of this work. Service date, sire, technician, method and any repeat services, kept per animal, turn a guess into a projection and let you build your own herd average over time.
