What an unweighted high school GPA is
An unweighted GPA is the plain arithmetic mean of your course grade points on a 0–4 scale. Every course counts exactly once: a year of AP Chemistry and a semester of health class carry identical weight, and the ceiling is 4.00 no matter how demanding your schedule was. That flatness is the point. The unweighted figure answers one question — how well did you do in the courses you took — and refuses to answer a second one about how hard those courses were.
Most American high schools compute the GPA this way because secondary courses are not measured in credit hours the way college courses are. Where a college assigns 4 credits to a lab science and 1 to a seminar, a high school typically assigns one unit (often 0.5 per semester) to nearly everything that meets daily for a year. When all the weights are equal, the credit-weighted average and the simple mean give the same answer, so schools use the simpler calculation.
Colleges care about the unweighted number precisely because it is comparable. Weighting schemes vary wildly between schools — different bonus sizes, different lists of qualifying courses, different caps — so a weighted 4.4 from one district means something different from a weighted 4.4 from the next. The formula and the two conversions behind it
Add the grade points and divide by the number of courses. The arithmetic is trivial; the conversions feeding it are where the answers diverge.
Letters to points. The base scale is fixed: A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0. The question is what your school does with pluses and minuses. Under plus/minus grading an A− is 3.7 and a B+ is 3.3, three tenths either side of the parent letter. Under whole-letter grading both collapse to 4.0 and 3.0. Nearly every school that awards an A+ still caps it at 4.0 on the unweighted scale, which is why this calculator does the same.
Percentages to points. If your report card shows numbers rather than letters, the ten-point bands apply: 90–100 becomes 4, 80–89 becomes 3, 70–79 becomes 2, 60–69 becomes 1, and anything below 60 becomes 0. Two consequences catch people out. A 90 and a 100 are worth exactly the same grade point, so the difference is invisible in the GPA. And an 89.5 versus a 90 is a full grade point apart. Some schools use a seven-point scale instead, where an A starts at 93; if that is yours, convert to letters using your school's chart first, then enter the letters.
The calculator distinguishes the two by size: a number above 5 is read as a percentage, and a number of 5 or below is read as a grade point you have already converted. That lets you type 3.7 directly if you want to override a conversion for a single course.
Worked example: one student, four terms
Take the four terms loaded by default, on the plus/minus scale.
- Term 1 — A, A−, B+, B, C+. Points 4.0 + 3.7 + 3.3 + 3.0 + 2.3 = 16.3 over 5 courses, a term GPA of 16.3 ÷ 5 = 3.26.
- Term 2 — A, B+, B+, B, B−. Points 4.0 + 3.3 + 3.3 + 3.0 + 2.7 = 16.3, again 5 courses, GPA 3.26.
- Term 3 — A, A, B+, B, B. Points 4.0 + 4.0 + 3.3 + 3.0 + 3.0 = 17.3 over 5 courses, GPA 3.46.
- Term 4 — A, A−, A−, B+, B. Points 4.0 + 3.7 + 3.7 + 3.3 + 3.0 = 17.7 over 5 courses, GPA 3.54.
- Overall. Total points 16.3 + 16.3 + 17.3 + 17.7 = 67.6 across 20 courses, so the unweighted GPA is 67.6 ÷ 20 = 3.38.
Because all four terms carry five courses each, the overall GPA also equals the mean of the four term GPAs: (3.26 + 3.26 + 3.46 + 3.54) ÷ 4 = 3.38. That equality only holds when the terms are the same size. Drop one course from Term 1 and the two methods separate, because the overall figure weights each term by its course count while the mean-of-terms does not. This calculator always reports the course-level average, which is what transcripts print.
Now the same record on a whole-letter scale, where A− becomes 4.0 and B+ becomes 3.0: term totals of 16, 16, 17 and 18, giving 67 ÷ 20 = 3.35. Same grades, different transcript convention, three hundredths of a point apart.
How to read the result
Judge the number against the schools you are applying to rather than a national figure, but a few landmarks are stable. A 4.00 unweighted means straight A grades in every course counted. A 3.00 means a B average. Most state universities publish the middle 50% of admitted students' GPAs — read that band rather than a single average, and check whether the figure they publish is weighted, unweighted, or recalculated on their own scale, because all three exist.
Two features of the unweighted average matter when you plan. It has no ceiling above 4.00, so once you are near the top the only direction available is down; students with a 3.95 protect it rather than raise it. And it is course-count sensitive: each new course is one more equal vote, so with 20 courses on the transcript a single new A moves the average by at most 0.03. Recovering from an early poor grade is a matter of volume, not of one good semester.
Pay attention to the trend as well as the level. The term-by-term chart above is not decoration: admissions readers explicitly look for an upward line, and a 3.0 that climbed from 2.6 to 3.4 reads differently from a flat 3.0. If your later terms are the strong ones, say so in the application rather than assuming the average conveys it.

Mistakes and limits
- Mixing weighted and unweighted grades. Entering 5.0 for an AP A produces a figure that is neither. Keep this calculator unweighted and use the weighted tool separately.
- Averaging term GPAs when the terms differ in size. The mean of your term averages equals the overall GPA only when every term has the same number of courses.
- Counting semester and final grades twice. Enter whichever grade your transcript records for GPA purposes — usually the semester or year grade, not both the quarter grades and the semester grade.
- Including pass/fail and audited courses. A P grade carries no grade points and belongs outside the average, exactly as in college.
- Assuming your school's scale. Whether an A− is 3.7 or 4.0, and whether an A starts at 90 or 93, are local decisions printed in the student handbook.
- Expecting the number to match a college's recalculation. Many universities recompute using only academic core courses — English, mathematics, science, social studies and world languages — and drop electives entirely, which usually changes the result.
Unweighted, weighted, and what colleges actually use
Your transcript may carry two GPAs. The unweighted figure this calculator produces caps at 4.00 and treats every course alike. The weighted GPA adds a bonus — commonly a full point for AP, IB and dual-enrolment courses and half a point for honours — and can exceed 4.00 as a result. Class rank is usually computed from the weighted figure, which is why students chase it.
Admissions offices use both, and often neither. A large share of selective universities recalculate the GPA themselves from the course list, applying their own scale, restricting to academic subjects, and sometimes ignoring ninth grade. The number you compute here is your best estimate of what they will start from, not what they will finish with. Ask each college's admissions site what it recalculates; the policies are published.

One caution for homeschool records and small programmes: because the unweighted GPA is a bare mean, it is fragile when the course count is small. With six courses on file, one C instead of an A moves the average by 0.33. Keep enough courses on the transcript that any single grade is not decisive, and document the grading scale you used, because a reader cannot infer it from the number.
