What an AP composite score is
An AP exam does not report a percentage. It reports a whole number from 1 to 5, and that number is produced in two distinct stages. First the College Board combines your two sections into a single composite score, weighting each section by the share of the exam it is meant to carry. Then it compares that composite with four cut points and assigns the band you fall into.
The two stages fail for different reasons, which is why it helps to see them separately. The composite is pure arithmetic: your raw multiple-choice count and your raw rubric points, scaled and added. Nothing about it is secret and nothing about it changes from year to year. The cut points are the part that moves. They are set after the exam has been administered and scored, using statistical equating so that a 4 means the same level of achievement whichever year a student sat the paper.
This calculator computes the first stage exactly and lets you supply the second. That division of labour is deliberate: any tool that claims to know this year's cut points before the College Board sets them is guessing. What you can do reliably is compute your composite, then test it against the cut points from a released scoring worksheet, from your teacher's practice-exam key, or from the conservative defaults loaded here.
How the weighting actually works
Each section is first reduced to a fraction of the points available in it. If you answered 33 of 45 multiple-choice questions correctly, that section is worth 33 ÷ 45 = 0.7333 of itself. If you earned 30 of a possible 54 free-response rubric points, that section is worth 30 ÷ 54 = 0.5556 of itself.
Those two fractions are then multiplied by the section weights and added. On an exam split evenly between the sections, the composite on a 100-point scale is 50 × 0.7333 + 50 × 0.5556 = 36.67 + 27.78 = 64.44. The composite is nothing more elaborate than a weighted average of two percentages.
Released College Board scoring worksheets usually express the same idea as per-item multipliers on a scale other than 100 — an exam with 45 multiple-choice items and 54 rubric points might multiply each correct item by 1.2000 and each rubric point by 1.0000 to build a 108-point composite. That is the identical calculation wearing different clothes: 1.2 × 45 = 54 points from the multiple choice and 1.0 × 54 = 54 points from the free response, an even split. Dividing everything by 1.08 puts it back on a 100-point scale. Use whichever scale your cut points are quoted on, and make sure the cut points and the composite are on the same scale — mixing a 108-point cut point with a 100-point composite is the single most common way to misread a practice result.
Two features of the multiple-choice section are worth stating outright. There is no deduction for a wrong answer on any current AP exam, so a blank and a wrong answer are worth the same and guessing costs nothing. And the raw count is the only thing that matters — item difficulty is handled through equating at the cut-point stage, not by weighting individual questions.
Worked example: 33 of 45 multiple choice and 30 of 54 rubric points
Take a practice exam with 45 multiple-choice questions and six free-response questions worth nine rubric points each, weighted 50/50. You answer 33 multiple-choice questions correctly and your teacher scores your free response at 30 points.
- Multiple-choice fraction. 33 ÷ 45 = 0.7333, or 73.33% of that section.
- Points per correct item. The section is worth 50 composite points across 45 questions, so each correct answer is worth 50 ÷ 45 = 1.1111 composite points.
- Multiple-choice contribution. 33 × 1.1111 = 36.67 composite points. Equivalently, 0.7333 × 50 = 36.67.
- Free-response fraction. 30 ÷ 54 = 0.5556, or 55.56% of that section.
- Points per rubric point. 50 ÷ 54 = 0.9259 composite points each.
- Free-response contribution. 30 × 0.9259 = 27.78 composite points.
- Composite. 36.67 + 27.78 = 64.44 out of 100.
- Band. Against the default cut points, 64.44 clears the 62 needed for a 4 but falls short of the 75 needed for a 5, so the predicted score is a 4, with 10.56 composite points still to find for a 5.
Notice how unbalanced the two sections are in terms of effort. One more correct multiple-choice answer adds 1.11 composite points; one more rubric point adds 0.93. On this exam a multiple-choice item is worth about 20% more than a rubric point, purely because there are fewer of them carrying the same section weight. On an exam with 100 multiple-choice items and 30 rubric points the arithmetic reverses, and each rubric point becomes worth more than three multiple-choice items.
Reading the predicted score
Treat the composite as the trustworthy number and the band as an estimate. Your composite is exact given your raw points. Whether it converts to a 3 or a 4 depends on cut points that were not published when you sat the practice exam, and on the released worksheet you happened to borrow them from.
The number that tells you most is the composite points to the next AP score. A gap of one or two points is a rounding-scale difference — a single free-response part or a pair of multiple-choice items. A gap of fifteen points is a content problem that another practice paper will not solve on its own. Use the section contributions to decide where to spend study time. If your multiple-choice percentage is well above your free-response percentage, your content knowledge is ahead of your ability to show work under time pressure, and practising full rubric-scored responses will move the composite more than another question bank will. If the free-response percentage is the higher of the two, you are losing points to recall and speed rather than to reasoning.
Finally, remember what the score is for. Colleges set their own AP credit and placement policies, and those policies differ by institution, by department and sometimes by the specific course you want to skip. The only authoritative source for the score you need is the credit policy published by the institution you are applying to.

The band column uses this page's default cut points of 75, 62, 50 and 35, which are conservative rules of thumb rather than published figures for any particular exam. Substitute the cut points from a released scoring worksheet for your subject whenever you have one.
Cut points are not fixed and are not published in advance
The composite required for each AP score is decided after the exam is scored, through an equating process that ties this year's form to previous forms of the same exam. That is what makes an AP score comparable across years even though the questions change. It also means no published table of cut points is valid for a future administration, and that a cut point copied from a released exam is a reasonable reference point rather than a promise.
When you are close to a band boundary, plan for the cut point to be a few points higher than the one you entered. Aim for a margin, not for the line.
Mistakes that make a predicted AP score wrong
- Mixing composite scales. A cut point taken from a 108-point worksheet is 8% larger than the same standard expressed out of 100, so comparing it against a 100-point composite makes the band look about six points too demanding around a cut of 75 and eight points at the top of the scale. Divide the 108-point figure by 1.08 before comparing.
- Using the wrong section weight. Most AP exams split the two sections evenly, but not all do. The split for your subject is printed in its course and exam description, and getting it wrong shifts the composite in whichever direction your weaker section lies.
- Counting free-response questions instead of rubric points. The free-response maximum is the sum of the rubric ceilings, not the number of questions. Six nine-point questions is 54, not 6.
- Self-scoring free response generously. Trained readers apply the published scoring guidelines strictly, and a point awarded for work you meant to show but did not write down is a point you will not get in June. Score your own work against the official guidelines, or have someone else score it.
- Assuming a wrong answer costs you. It does not. The guessing penalty was removed years ago, so leaving an item blank is strictly worse than an informed guess.
- Treating a single practice exam as a prediction. A practice paper measures one sitting under conditions that are rarely the real ones. Two or three papers with consistent composites tell you far more than one.

What makes AP different is the coarseness of the reporting scale. Five bands across a hundred composite points is wide: on this page's default cuts the band for a 4 spans 13 composite points and the band for a 3 spans 12, while the outer bands are wider still. Small raw differences are therefore usually invisible, and a boundary case is decided by a single question. Compare that with a 200-800 SAT section, whose reporting scale is fine enough that most raw points change the score you receive.
