What freight class is and why density drives it

Freight class is the code that tells an LTL carrier how much trailer space and handling risk your shipment represents. It comes from the National Motor Freight Classification, published by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association, which sorts commodities into eighteen classes numbered 50 through 500. A low class number means dense, easy-to-handle, low-liability freight; a high number means bulky freight that eats linear feet of a trailer without adding much revenue weight.

The classification rests on four characteristics: density, stowability, handling and liability. For a large share of commodities the NMFC assigns the class purely from density, using a published band table, and that is what this calculator reproduces. Density is the only one of the four you can measure on your own dock with a tape and a scale, which is why every shipper conversation about class turns into a conversation about pounds per cubic foot.

The commercial stake is real. A carrier's base rate is quoted per hundredweight at a given class, so moving a pallet from class 125 to class 92.5 changes the rate line on every quote you receive for that lane. Getting the number right before the bill of lading goes out also avoids the reweigh-and-reclass inspection, where the carrier measures the pallet itself, rates it at the class its dimensioner produces, and bills the difference plus an inspection fee.

The formula, and what each measurement has to be

Density is weight divided by volume, and the only difficulty is being strict about what goes into each. Multiply the greatest length, greatest width and greatest height of one handling unit in inches, divide by 1,728 to convert cubic inches to cubic feet, and multiply by the number of identical units. Divide the shipment's total gross weight by that cube.

Greatest is the operative word. A carton that overhangs the pallet edge by two inches makes the pallet 44 in wide, not 40 in, because the trailer has to give up 44 in of width. A shrink-wrapped cap that domes above the top carton counts. So does the pallet itself: the deck of a stringer GMA pallet adds roughly 5.5 in of height that the trailer must accommodate even though it holds no product. That is why the calculator adds the deck height by default.

Weight is gross weight — product, packaging, dunnage and pallets. It is the number the certified scale at the terminal will produce, not the sum of the product weights on your packing list. If you weigh product only and measure the pallet honestly, you will understate density and overstate the class, which is the expensive direction to be wrong in.

One more rule catches people out: when a shipment contains handling units of different sizes, you do not average them. Each distinct configuration is measured and rated on its own line of the bill of lading. Run this calculator once per configuration.

Worked example: two 48 × 40 × 48 pallets at 750 lb each

You are shipping two identical pallets of packaged goods. Each measures 48 in long and 40 in wide with the freight standing 48 in above the deck, and the whole shipment weighs 1,500 lb on the certified scale.

  1. Add the pallet. The GMA pallet deck is 5.5 in, so the shipping height is 48 + 5.5 = 53.5 in.
  2. Cube one unit. 48 × 40 × 53.5 = 102,720 cubic inches.
  3. Convert to cubic feet. 102,720 ÷ 1,728 = 59.4444 ft³ per pallet.
  4. Total the shipment. 59.4444 × 2 = 118.8889 ft³.
  5. Divide weight by cube. 1,500 ÷ 118.8889 = 12.6168 PCF.
  6. Read the band. 12.6168 falls at or above 12 and below 13.5, which is the class 85 band.

Now see how thin the margin is. The floor of the class 85 band is 12 PCF, and 12 × 118.8889 = 1,426.7 lb. Your 1,500 lb clears that floor by only 73 lb. Ship the same two pallets at 1,400 lb and the density drops to 11.77 PCF, one band down, and the shipment rates at class 92.5. Conversely, 13.5 × 118.8889 = 1,605 lb would carry it into class 77.5 — 105 lb more than you have.

If you forget the pallet deck and cube the freight at 48 in tall, you get 106.6667 ft³ and 14.06 PCF, which reads as class 77.5. The terminal will measure 53.5 in, re-rate at 85, and bill you the difference. That single omission is the most common cause of a reclass.

How to read the result

Treat the class this calculator returns as your density-based class, and check it against the NMFC item number for your commodity before you commit it to a bill of lading. Some items are classified on density, in which case this number is the answer. Others carry a fixed class — a commodity that is fragile, hazardous, awkward to stow, or high value can be rated well above what its density suggests, and no amount of tighter packing changes that.

Where you have freedom, the lever is cube, not weight. Reducing height by four inches on a 48 × 40 pallet removes 7,680 cubic inches, or 4.44 ft³ per unit, and the density rises in proportion. Adding weight raises density too, but you rarely get to invent weight; you often get to remove air. Down-stacking two half-height pallets into one full-height pallet is the standard move, and it also halves the handling-unit count, which some carriers price separately.

Watch the margin the calculator reports above the band floor. Terminal dimensioners round each axis up to the next whole inch and weigh to the nearest pound, so a shipment sitting a tenth of a PCF above its floor is a coin toss. If the margin is under about 3% of the floor value, measure again with the load stretch-wrapped exactly as it will ship, and consider quoting the safer class.

Finally, remember that class is not the whole rate. Once your pallet exceeds roughly 8 ft of trailer length, or the shipment occupies more than a threshold number of linear feet, most carriers apply a linear-foot or cubic-capacity rule that overrides class-based pricing entirely. The third column is the band floor multiplied by 53.3333 ft³, the cube of a 48 × 40 × 48 in handling unit, rounded to the nearest pound. It is the lightest weight at that cube which still rates at the class shown.

Mistakes that produce the wrong class

  • Leaving the pallet out of the height. Five and a half inches on a 48 in stack is roughly a tenth of the cube, and it is enough to cross a band in either direction.
  • Measuring the pallet instead of the load. Overhanging cartons and banding set the greatest dimension. Carriers measure the extremes, and so should you.
  • Using net product weight. Gross weight includes packaging, dunnage, slip sheets and the pallets themselves. A GMA pallet alone is 30 to 40 lb.
  • Averaging mixed handling units. Different sizes are separate lines on the bill of lading, each with its own density and class.
  • Assuming density settles the class. If the NMFC item for your commodity carries a fixed class, density is irrelevant. Look up the item number before you argue with a carrier.
  • Ignoring the linear-foot rule. Long or tall shipments can be priced on trailer space regardless of the class you declare.
  • Forgetting that the terminal rounds up. Dimensioners round each axis to the whole inch, which lowers your measured density slightly compared with a tape measure reading in fractions.

Which document actually governs your rate

The NMFC is published and maintained by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association, and it is a copyrighted commercial publication rather than a government standard. Carriers reference a specific NMFC issue in their rules tariff, and that tariff is the contract term that binds you. The density bands reproduced here are the classification scale the NMFC applies to density-rated items; the item number for your particular commodity, its packaging requirement and any exceptions live in the NMFC itself. When a carrier reclasses a shipment, ask for the NMFC item number they applied and the measurement record from the dimensioner.

Where this sits among the other freight calculations

Density and class are the front end of an LTL quote, but they are not the whole cost picture. The rate you finally pay is the class rate for the lane multiplied by hundredweight, plus fuel surcharge and accessorials — liftgate, residential delivery, inside delivery, limited access. A shipment that looks cheap at class 70 can lose that advantage to two accessorials.

Upstream of class sits the packing decision. How many cases go on a pallet, and how tall the stack ends up, is what sets the cube in the first place; the pallet pattern calculator works that out from case dimensions and a maximum load height, and it reports the cube utilisation that this calculator turns into density. Downstream sits the carrier's own economics: an owner-operator's cost per mile is what a truckload alternative has to beat, and once you are moving enough pallets, a dedicated truckload move can undercut a class-rated LTL shipment entirely.

A last piece of practical advice: keep the measurement record. Photograph the loaded pallet next to a tape and keep the certified scale ticket. When a carrier's inspection report disagrees with your bill of lading, that evidence is the difference between a credited reclass and a paid one.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate freight class from density?

Divide total gross weight in pounds by total cubic feet, then look the result up in the NMFC density band table. Cubic feet is length × width × height in inches, divided by 1,728, multiplied by the number of handling units. A shipment at 14.06 PCF falls in the 13.5-to-under-15 band, which is class 77.5. Confirm against the NMFC item number for your commodity, because items with a fixed class ignore density.

Do I include the pallet in the height and weight?

Yes, both. The carrier moves the pallet, so its 5.5 in deck is part of the shipping height and its 30 to 40 lb is part of the gross weight. Adding the deck lowers density slightly, because you add volume with only a little weight. Leaving it out is the single most common reason a declared class fails inspection.

What is a good freight class to aim for?

Lower numbers price better per hundredweight, so most shippers work toward class 70 or below by removing air from the pallet. Whether you can get there depends entirely on the commodity: bagged fasteners will land near class 50 without effort, while packaged foam will not clear class 250 no matter how it is stacked. Aim for the best class your product's real density supports rather than a number in the abstract.

Why did my carrier reclass my shipment?

Almost always because their dimensioner and certified scale produced a different density than your bill of lading declared. The usual causes are an omitted pallet height, overhang that made the pallet wider than 40 in, or net rather than gross weight. Ask for the inspection report, which shows the measured dimensions, the weight and the NMFC item applied, and compare it against your own record.

Does higher density always mean a cheaper shipment?

Higher density lowers the class number, and a lower class carries a lower rate per hundredweight, but the shipment is also heavier, so the total charge can still rise. The rate line improves; the bill depends on the product of rate and weight. Where density improves because you removed air rather than added product, the total normally falls.

Can two pallets of different sizes share one class?

No. Each distinct handling-unit configuration is measured, rated and listed separately on the bill of lading. Averaging the cube across different sizes produces a density that matches neither, and the carrier will correct it. Run the calculator once for each configuration and enter each result as its own line.

What is the difference between density-based class and a fixed NMFC class?

A density-based item takes whichever class its measured density lands in, so the class changes with how you pack. A fixed item carries one class regardless of density, because stowability, handling difficulty or liability dominates — hazardous materials, fragile glassware and high-value electronics are typical examples. The NMFC item number tells you which regime applies.

How does freight class relate to dimensional weight?

They solve the same problem in opposite directions. Class assigns a category from density and prices per hundredweight at that class; dimensional weight converts volume into a billable weight using a divisor and prices per pound. LTL carriers use class, parcel carriers use dimensional weight, and a mid-sized shipment is worth pricing both ways before you choose a mode.
