What a roofing square is, and why bundles are not sold in them
A roofing square is 100 square feet of finished roof surface. It is the unit every supplier quotes in, every estimator measures in, and every manufacturer rates coverage in. Shingles, though, are not shipped by the square — they are shipped by the bundle, because a full square of asphalt shingles weighs upwards of 200 pounds and no roofer wants to carry that up a ladder in one piece.
The bundle-to-square ratio depends entirely on the product. Three-tab shingles and most standard laminated architectural shingles run three bundles to the square. Heavy dimensional shingles run four, and premium designer profiles that imitate slate or shake run five. The number is printed on the wrapper. Order three to the square when the product is packed four and the delivery arrives a quarter short of the roof, which is why this calculator asks for the figure rather than assuming it.
Two more things separate a shingle order from a simple area calculation. First, you order against sloped area, never footprint: a 6/12 roof has 11.8% more surface than the rectangle it covers. Second, cut waste is real. Every hip, valley, dormer and rake produces off-cuts that cannot be used elsewhere, so the ordered quantity always exceeds the measured quantity.
The formula, term by term
The core calculation is one line: divide sloped area by 100 to get squares, inflate by the waste allowance, multiply by bundles per square, and round up to a whole bundle.
Sloped area (A). Measure the roof surface, or measure the footprint and multiply by the slope factor √(144 + x²) ÷ 12 for a pitch of x in 12. A 6/12 roof has a slope factor of 1.1180, so a 1,500 ft² footprint carries 1,677 ft² of roof. The roof area calculator handles the geometry when the plan is more than one rectangle.
Waste allowance (w). This covers the triangular off-cuts at hips and valleys, the starter course when it is cut from field shingles, and the bundle you drop off the staging. It is a percentage of area, not of bundles, so it compounds with the bundles-per-square figure automatically.
Bundles per square (b). Straight from the wrapper. Do not infer it from the shingle's weight or brand name.
Rounding. The ceiling function matters. 79.2 bundles is 80 bundles, because suppliers do not split a bundle. On a large order that rounding is trivial; on a small dormer re-roof it is a meaningful part of the cost.
Cap, starter, underlayment and nails each follow their own rule because each is sold by a different measure — lineal feet for cap and starter, squares of coverage for underlayment, and count for fasteners.
Worked example: a 2,400 ft² sloped roof at 10% waste
Take a hip roof with 2,400 ft² of sloped surface, 60 lineal feet of combined ridge and hips, 120 lineal feet of eave and rake, standard laminated shingles at three bundles to the square with 21 shingles in a bundle, synthetic underlayment at 10 squares per roll, four nails per shingle, and a 10% waste allowance. Field bundles cost $42.
- Net squares. 2,400 ÷ 100 = 24.00 squares.
- Add waste. 24.00 × 1.10 = 26.40 squares to order.
- Field bundles. 26.40 × 3 = 79.2, rounded up to 80 bundles.
- Cap bundles. 60 lf ÷ 20 lf per bundle = 3 bundles of hip-and-ridge cap.
- Starter. 120 lf ÷ 100 lf per bundle = 1.2, rounded up to 2 bundles.
- Underlayment. 26.40 ÷ 10 squares per roll = 2.64, rounded up to 3 rolls.
- Field nails. 3 bundles × 21 shingles = 63 shingles per square. 26.40 × 63 × 4 = 6,653 nails. At 140 nails per pound for a 1¼ in roofing nail that is 47.5 lb — buy 50 lb, because cap and starter need fasteners too.
- Field shingle cost. 80 × $42 = $3,360, before cap, starter, underlayment, flashing, drip edge and labour.
Notice what the 10% waste allowance actually bought: 8 extra bundles. If the roof turns out to be cut up with three dormers and you should have carried 15%, you would need 84 bundles — a four-bundle short order that stops the crew.
How to read the numbers before you place the order
Check the bundle count against the pallet. Shingles ship on pallets, and the bundles-per-pallet figure varies by manufacturer and by product weight, so ask your supplier for theirs rather than assuming. Then compare it with your bundle count: when you land a few bundles short of a full pallet, rounding up is almost always cheaper than sending a truck back for four bundles.
Waste allowance is a judgement, not a constant. Use 10% on a plain gable with two rakes and one ridge. Use 15% on a hip roof, because every course dies into a hip at an angle and the off-cut is scrap. Use more again where there are valleys, dormers, skylight curbs or a turret. Cap coverage varies more than anything else on the order. A bundle of purpose-made hip-and-ridge covers roughly 20 to 25 lineal feet depending on the profile and exposure. Read the wrapper. If you are cutting cap from three-tab field shingles instead, one bundle yields far more lineal feet, and you should figure that separately.
The nail figure is field nails only. It excludes the fasteners for cap, starter, drip edge and underlayment, which is why the worked example rounds 47.5 lb up to a 50 lb box. Coil nails for a pneumatic gun are sold by the count on the box rather than by weight — commonly 7,200 to a box, though you should read the label — so compare counts, not pounds: the worked example's 6,653 field nails is one such box with a little to spare.

The same footprint takes 18 more bundles at 12/12 than at 3/12 — a third again as much material for an identical floor plan. That gap is the whole reason you never order off the footprint. Each bundle figure is the sloped-area column carried through the calculator at 10% waste and three bundles per square.
What the code requires
Asphalt shingle installation is governed by Chapter 9 of the International Residential Code; this page assumes the 2021 IRC. The provisions that change your order are these: underlayment is required over the entire deck, asphalt shingles need a minimum slope of two units vertical in twelve units horizontal (and below four in twelve you must double the underlayment), a strip shingle takes at least four fasteners, and fasteners must penetrate through the sheathing or at least ¾ in into it. An ice barrier is required in regions where ice forms at the eaves, and it is an extra material line the bundle count does not cover. Your local jurisdiction may amend any of this, so confirm the adopted edition with your building department.
Mistakes that leave a roof short
- Ordering off the footprint. The single most expensive error on this page. A 1,500 ft² house with a 9/12 roof carries 1,875 ft² of shingles — 25% more than the plan area.
- Assuming three bundles per square. True for three-tab and most standard laminates, false for heavy dimensional and designer profiles. Read the wrapper before you price the job.
- Forgetting that cap and starter are separate products. They are counted in lineal feet, not squares, and on a hip roof the cap line can exceed 200 lineal feet.
- Ignoring the waste allowance on a cut-up roof. Hips, valleys, dormers and skylight curbs all generate unusable off-cuts. The allowance is not padding; it is the material that ends up in the skip.
- Buying nails by count instead of by weight, or the reverse. Hand-drive nails are sold by the pound, coil nails by the box. Convert once and write both numbers on the order.
- Leaving out ice barrier, drip edge, valley metal, pipe boots and ventilation. None of them are in the bundle count, and together they are a substantial share of the material cost.
- Mixing dye lots. Colour blend varies between production runs. Order the whole roof at once and check that the lot numbers match on delivery.
Where this fits with the rest of the roof takeoff
This calculator is the last step in a chain. First you establish the pitch, either from a level and a rule or from the rise and run on the plans. Then you convert footprint to sloped area. Only then does the bundle count mean anything.

For anything other than asphalt shingles, the arithmetic changes. Standing seam metal is ordered by panel length and coverage width, not by the square. Concrete and clay tile are ordered by the piece, at a coverage that depends on headlap. Wood shakes are sold by the square but at different bundle counts by grade. The square itself remains the common currency, so the first half of this calculation still applies — it is only the conversion from squares to product units that differs.
Terms on the order
- Square
- 100 ft² of finished roof surface. The unit roofing is quoted, measured and warranted in.
- Field shingle
- The ordinary course shingle that covers the plane of the roof, as opposed to starter, cap or valley material.
- Starter strip
- A sealed, adhesive-backed course laid at the eave (and often the rake) under the first course of field shingles. It provides the seal that resists wind uplift at the most exposed edge.
- Hip and ridge cap
- Pre-cut, pre-scored single-tab pieces that fold over a hip or ridge. Sold by the bundle and rated in lineal feet, not squares.
- Exposure
- The visible height of each shingle course after the next course is laid — typically 5⅝ in for a laminated shingle. Exposure determines how many shingles a square takes.
- Slope factor
- The ratio of sloped roof area to plan area for a given pitch: √(144 + x²) ÷ 12 where x is the rise in inches per 12 inches of run.
