Every ring scale is the same measurement in different clothes
A ring size is not a mysterious code. It is the inside circumference of the band, expressed on whichever arbitrary scale a country adopted. Once you know the circumference in millimetres, every system follows by arithmetic, and the conversion between any two of them is exact rather than approximate.
The US scale is defined on diameter: size 0 has an inside diameter of 0.458 inches and each whole size adds 0.032 inches. In millimetres that is 11.63 mm at size 0 and 0.8128 mm per size, which is where the formula at the top of this page comes from. Multiply the diameter increment by π and you get 2.5535 mm of circumference per size, so the circumference form is C = 36.54 + 2.5535n.
The European system, standardised in ISO 8653, dispenses with the scale entirely and calls the size the inside circumference in millimetres. A ring marked 54 has a 54 mm inside circumference and is a shade under US 7. Some continental retailers subtract 40 and call the same ring a 14, which is why quoting the millimetre figure removes all ambiguity.
The British scale runs in letters, with roughly two letters to one US size. The Japanese industrial scale is linear in diameter like the US one but with a smaller step, at one third of a millimetre per size, so Japanese sizes run about twice the US number. All of these are straight lines through the same underlying circumference, which is what lets one measurement produce all four.
The two adjustments that are not in the formula
Band width. The reference sizes on a jeweller's mandrel assume a fairly narrow band, around 2 to 4 mm. A wide band bears on more of the finger, has more surface area gripping it, and cannot deform as the joint flexes, so it feels tighter at the same nominal size. The trade convention is to go up about a quarter size for every 2 mm of width above the reference, which puts a 8 mm band half a size above a 4 mm one. Comfort-fit bands, which are domed on the inside, offset part of this — a comfort-fit ring often measures a touch larger inside than a flat one of the same marked size.
The knuckle. A ring has to pass the middle joint before it can reach the base of the finger, so the binding constraint is whichever of the two is larger. Measure both. When the knuckle is within about 3 mm of circumference of the base, a normally sized ring goes on with a firm push and stays put. When the gap is larger, you face a genuine trade-off: size to the knuckle and the ring spins at the base, or size to the base and it does not go on. Jewellers solve it mechanically, with sizing beads soldered inside the shank, a flat-topped fitting bar, or a hinged shank on larger gaps.
What no formula can fix is when you measure. Finger circumference varies over the day by a meaningful fraction of a size — larger in heat, after salt, after exercise and late in the day; smaller in cold and first thing in the morning. Measure at the end of a normal day at room temperature, and if the reading matters, measure three times on different days and take the largest.
Worked example: a 54.4 mm paper strip measurement
You wrap a paper strip round the base of the ring finger, mark the overlap and measure 54.4 mm. The knuckle measures 57 mm. The ring you are buying has a 4 mm band.
- Inside diameter. 54.4 ÷ π = 17.316 mm.
- US size, exact. (17.316 − 11.63) ÷ 0.8128 = 5.686 ÷ 0.8128 = 6.995.
- Rounded. 6.995 rounds to US 7, and the published reference for US 7 is 17.3 mm diameter and 54.4 mm circumference, which is exactly where you started.
- UK. 2 × 6.995 + 0.5 = 14.49, rounded to 14.5, and the fourteenth letter is N — so N½.
- Europe / ISO. The circumference is the size: 54.
- Japan. 1 + (54.4 − 40.84) ÷ 1.047 = 1 + 12.95 = 13.95, so size 14.
- Knuckle check. 57 − 54.4 = 2.6 mm, inside the 3 mm comfort range, so a size 7 will pass the joint.
Now change one thing. If the band were 8 mm wide instead of 4, the width allowance adds 0.25 × (8 − 4) ÷ 2 = 0.5 of a size, taking 6.995 to 7.495 and rounding to US 7½. That is the difference between a ring that slides on and one that has to be worked over the joint, from a change nobody thinks to mention when ordering online.
How much precision is real, and how much is not
One quarter of a US size is 0.203 mm of diameter and 0.638 mm of circumference. That is finer than a paper strip can measure reliably, which is why the string method is worth treating as accurate to about half a size and no better. Measuring an existing ring with callipers is worth roughly a quarter size, and a jeweller's steel mandrel and ring set is the reference.
Because of that, be careful about the direction of your rounding. A ring that is a quarter size too large can be worn; one that is a quarter size too small cannot go on at all. When the exact figure sits close to a boundary and the ring cannot easily be resized — full eternity bands, tension settings, tungsten, ceramic and titanium all resist resizing or cannot be resized — take the larger size.
Watch out for the two common measurement errors. Pulling a paper strip tight compresses the flesh and can read a full size small; the strip should sit snug but not indent. And measuring an existing ring across the outside rather than the inside overstates the diameter by twice the wall thickness, typically 1.5 to 3 mm, which is two to four whole sizes.
Finally, remember which finger. The dominant hand tends to measure slightly larger than the other, and the same person's index, ring and little fingers differ by several sizes. Measure the exact finger the ring is for, on the hand it will be worn on.

The European / ISO size is simply the circumference column rounded to the nearest whole millimetre. UK letters run at two letters per US size; Japanese sizes at roughly two per US size on a one-third-millimetre diameter step.
How to measure at home without a sizer
Cut a strip, do not use string
Cut a strip of paper about 5 mm wide and 100 mm long. String and thread stretch, and cotton absorbs moisture and shrinks; paper does neither over the ten seconds this takes.
Wrap at the base of the finger
Wrap it round the base of the correct finger on the correct hand, snug against the skin without indenting it. Mark where the leading edge crosses the strip.
Measure to the mark in millimetres
Lay the strip flat against a ruler and read from the end to the mark. That figure is the inside circumference — enter it directly.
Repeat over the knuckle
Wrap the same strip round the widest part of the middle joint with the finger straight and mark again. Enter that as the knuckle circumference so the calculator can check the ring will pass.
Do it three times on different days
Late afternoon, at room temperature, not after exercise or a hot shower. Take the largest of the three readings; a ring that is slightly loose is wearable, a tight one is not.
Traps when buying a ring as a surprise
- Borrowing a ring from the wrong finger. A ring worn on the middle finger is typically one to two sizes larger than the same person's ring finger. Note which finger you took it from.
- Measuring the outside diameter. Add the wall thickness twice and you are two to four sizes out. Measure the inside, or press the ring into soft clay and measure the impression.
- Ignoring the setting. A ring with a large stone sits higher and is harder to work over a knuckle than a plain band of the same size, because it cannot be rotated freely while pushing.
- Assuming any ring can be resized. Tungsten, ceramic and titanium generally cannot; full eternity bands and channel settings often cannot be resized more than a fraction; tension settings usually cannot be resized at all.
- Sizing in winter for a summer wedding. Cold fingers can read half a size or more below the same finger in August.
- Forgetting the knuckle entirely. The knuckle, not the base, decides whether the ring goes on. It is the single most common reason a correctly sized ring is returned.
Where ring sizing sits among fit measurements
Ring sizing is unusual among garment and jewellery sizes in being genuinely standardised: the scales are linear, published and interconvertible, so a millimetre figure travels anywhere in the world without loss. Almost nothing else you buy by size behaves that well, which is why quoting the circumference alongside the local size is the professional habit.
